2759.0. "Talia Manor's Zeus. R.I.P." by REFINE::TAYLOR (Cat lovers are a special breed) Fri Aug 11 1989 10:59

It's with a very heavy heart that I put this note in here.

Our dear little Michaela delivered her litter of one kitten last night.
Unfortunately, the kitten was born dead.

Here's what happened. her 63 days was up on Monday. We were bringing
her to the vet first thing every morning for the last week so that
someone would be there if she went into labor. Last night my mother
went to pick her up at around 5:00. The vet went into the back room to
get her. She came back without Micki and said, "Start boiling the
water. Her water has just broken." She told her to come back in about
an hour. We went back at around 6:00 and the vet said that she hadn't
had the kitten yet. She told us to come back at around 8:00 and the
kitten definitely would have been born by then. Well, we came back and
the vet came out and said, "Well, I've got good news and bad news."
The good news was that Micki was just fine. The bad news was that the
kitten was not. It was born breech and she believes that the kitten
suffocated in the birth canal. The vet said that if it had been born
head first, this probably never would have happened. But because Micki
was scared and very tense, her birth canal didn't open wide enough and
the kitten couldn't get out. What makes this even worse was that
this was a male golden. EXACTLY what we had wanted. We brought Micki
home last night. She is doing all right, but still looking for her
kitten. It breaks my heart to see her looking everywhere for her baby.

Well, I just thought that everyone should know. Many of you had met
Micki when you came to my house for the party.

One good thing about this is that the vet said that this doesn't mean
that she'll have problems with other litters. She should be just fine
with her next litter. We plan on breeding her in about another year.
    Hopefully things will go better.

    Holly

Oh, Holly, I'm so sorry. I know how you were looking forward to this
kitten. I'm glad Mama Kitty is doing OK.

Lots of Love will make her feel better (which *I Know* you are already
    giving her).

Give her our hugs and kisses.

    Holly,

Sometimes these things happen in breeding. Is is sad, and
disappointing, but the good news really is good news, Micki is okay.

Her next litter will be healthy and happy.

Thanks everyone. I called home a little while ago and Micki is doing
just fine. But still looking for her kitten. They found her searching
    through my mother's drawers.

RE: Joanne. I realize that this kind of thing does come with breeding.
But no matter how many times it happens, I'm still going to feel this
way every time. It'll probably get easier, but it's rough. Especailly
where it was a Male shaded golden. Shaded goldens aren't very common.
The breeder that we got Micki from has only had a handful of goldens in
all her years of breeding shaded silvers (for those of you who don't
know, the only way to get a shaded golden is out of a golden or a
    silver).

Golden is a recessive to Silver, isn't it? If so, then if your
golden is bred to a silver who carries golden, then you would have
a chance of getting 50% goldens in the litter. The way to increase
your chances is to breed to a golden male. I have a good friend
who has a golden male, GRC Harthrob Krugerrand (sp). Maybe I could
help you arrange for a stud service. This boy is a CFA cat, and
placed very high in our region this year. He has already sired
    several Grand Champion offspring.

Holly, when something like what you just went through happens to
me, I just tell myself that if it ever does get easy, then it is
time for me to get out of breeding. Hang in there, and try to focus
on Micki and how well she is doing. Maybe you could distract her
from looking for her baby with a little extra attention and love.
It will help both of you through this tough time.

    Holly,
I'm so sorry. What a terrible disappointment after waiting all
that time. I know it won't help much, but we'll add ?Zeus?'s name
to the Silver lining memorial for this quarter.

So sorry to hear about the kitten, Holly. I hope it works out
better for you all next time. It's so tragic to lose a kitten.

    Holly,

I am so sorry to hear of the loss. These things do happen during
breeding, and, to be honest, every time feels tragic. I hope your
luck changes soon -- it is easier to bear the losses when there
    are also some successes!

I understand...my very first litter required an emergency C-section
    *and* spaying the Momcat.

    Good luck in the future!

    Holly,

as you can tell, I'm about a week behind in noting, but I wanted
to let you know how sorry I am for Micki's kitten. Thank God that
    Micki is okay.

    Hugs to both of you!
