| I heard about the earthquake on the TV news this morning (too lazy to
get out of bed at 6:00, even with a tubby little black cat walking back
and forth across me, so watched news and weather 'til 6:45). The Boston
newscaster didn't act like it was any big deal.
"Ho, hum, there was an earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area at
mumble o'clock this morning (yawn). It measured 5.something on the
Richter scale. In sports today....."
When I heard "earthquake" I sat right up in bed and thought of you guys
out there in sunny-but-jiggly California. It must've been pretty scary.

Where was the quake centered? The Boston newscasters I watched didn't
even mention it! But then, they don't mention much after the West
Coast at all. We do sometimes get the weather ..... what the temp will
be. Otherwise, it has to be major disaster to hear anything about it.

| As a San Josean, I can attest to the fact that it was real noticable....
4 cats and 1 doberman joined me on my wildly sloshing waterbed and all
stared at me waiting for me to MAKE IT STOP...After it settled down,
we all looked at one another and said, "well, that wasn't so bad...wasn't
the big one after all"...and went back to sleep. When the aftershock
hit, I braced for another gathering on the bed....but nothing happened!
I toured the house and found all in their respective spots, sleeping
soundly. Hannah did look up sleepily as if to say, "why are you
up at this time of night?". Sigh. I didn't get much sleep last night.

| It was centered near Lexington Resevior Dam just SW of San Jose
and west of Los Gatos (the Cats? Hey....) ;)
Some people (well, later on, since no one says anything at 1:15am
on the radio) were joking to put on some waders (guess the dam didn't
like being roughed up), but in reflection, there probably isn't
enough water in that lake to get your feets wet.
My cats didn't appear too upset, just looked around at all the noise.
The kitten was crated for the night, so I don't know what he thought,
but not a peep. I, on the other hand, was plotting a fast escape....
;) ("Okie, grab the birds on the way out, grab the crate, where's
the other cats, etc")

| Boy, that was a fun ride last night wasn't it. Bailey ended up
under the bed, Amelia was in the middle of the bedroom floor looking
dumbstruck (even 5 min. after it stopped) and Carrie was laying on
the bookshelf enjoying the ride. Aftershocks didn't seem to bother
them at all.
I don't like those quakes that have the sudden slam and then rock
you around. And what is it that makes that loud noise when they
hit? You shoulda heard the car alarm symphony going in my parking
lot. It was kind of musical as they all began to reset and fade
away into a quite night.
I'm cat sitting for a friend who lives just up the road from Lexington
Reservoir. I'm not due to check on the cat until tomorrow since
his roomates are around today but I'm interested in knowing how
his house came through the quake since its sitting so close to the
epicenter. I'm also a little wary about being up there Wednesday
and Friday night if an aftershock should hit.

P.S. It's Carrie's 1 year old birthday today...maybe she just wanted
to bring it in with a bang ;^)

| I never knew about the earthquake until I read this note. So much for
the news on my car radio. Never mentioned on my 45 minute drive in
this morning. I hope everybody is OK.
Tell Carrie to find another way to celebrate her birthday. No need
to scare mommy.
I thought anything over 4 on the scale was dangerous. This one
registered 5.1.

| Well, this one was a scary one, but we had a 6.2 centered in my
home town a couple of years ago, and that was much worse. While
this one was going on, I was thinking wow! It just keeps going....
We didn't have much damage this time, except for our psyche's.
The 6.2 nearly totaled the inside of my home.
Actually, I handled the quake last night much better than I handled
the after shock this morning. The one that hit at about 9:00 am.
SCI is on rollers since it is a glass building, it continued to
roll and settle for a minute or two afterwards. And that one was
only a 4.5.
The really interesting thing is that some scientists have said that
last nights quake was a foreshock of a larger one that will hit
in the next 5 days or so. So, now I have the whole week to worry
about!!!
Cats handled it fine, they just looked up sleepily and then went
back to sleep.

| The larger quake they're predicting for the next 5 days is expected
to be approx. 6.1 which is another reason why I'm concerned about
being up in the Lexington Reservoir area. I can't wait to see how
my friend's house fared after the 5.1 quake we just had...will give
me a good idea what to expect if I'm up there when the biggy hits.

| It's basically a smaller earthquake following a large one.
It originates at or near the same place as the large quake.
There are usually several of them (some felt some not) as the earth
settles.
