| Sue, I have four long haired cats and all of them drag their butts
at one time or another. Actually, it is more of a "scooting" action.
Anal sack problems are supposedly very rare in cats or at least
that's what I've heard.
Don't panic yet. Maybe others can help.

| I haven't have any problem with this on my cats, but there is a
little bit of information in note 681.

2735.3 | Similar problem | SPGBAS::MCNAMARA | | Mon Aug 07 1989 13:13 | 8 |
| One of my Siamese had this problem last winter. He exhibited no
dragging or scooting or even licking. We just happened to notice a
big lump under his tail.
He had it lanced and stitched and was on antibiotic for ten days. He
has been fine since - I am hoping we don't have the problem again.

2735.4 | Barney had this problem | USSLKG::MTAG | | Mon Aug 07 1989 13:56 | 10 |
| Barney had this problem in June. He kept biting the fur away on the
base of his tail and I thought it was a skin problem. Brought him to
the vet and sure enough, he had swollen/blocked anal sacks. She
expelled them (or whatever... it was gross) and gave him a shot that
cleared him up. If it goes unattended, it can be very serious, but if
caught early enough, then the cat will be fine. By the way, Barney
didn't drag his butt on the ground at all.

| i have the impression that some cats have this problem from time to
time, but most don't need to be operated on. I wouldn't worry yet.

| Thanks for the advice.But when should I start really worrying?
The Vet did expell the the one that was full but why does Alex
keep scooting across the rug? Like some others have said in this
note: An operation would take care of it. Does anyone know how
much this is? Should I bring him back to the vet?
Thanks

| well, he could be scooting across the rug if he stool was
1. loose and he got some on his fur (quite possible if the vet put
him on Antibiotics)
2. constipated, and it wasn't coming out.

| If his anal sacs are bothering him, that would cause him to scoot
across the rug. They may itch, and what better way to scratch them
than to scoot across your beautiful rug.
I think it is interesting that in most cases of scooting, anal sacs
are the problem and not worms.
