2725.0. "Old kitten gets a reluctant brother" by LEXIS::JOHNSON (All the Worlds a Stage) Mon Jul 31 1989 22:52

	Hi,

My fiance and I adopted a kitten about 8 weeks ago. The kitten (Sam)
is now 16 weeks old and we got the yearning for another kitten. We knew
this would cause a few problems for Sam but we thought a companion would
be good for him (and us of course). Well we got Goldy yesterday. He is
9 weeks old and very cute. Naturally Sam took offense to this intruder
	as we expected him to.

They kinda get along. They play cat and mouse with Goldy being the
mouse. They aren't sharing anything but the litter box as we set them
both up so Sam wouldn't feel like he lost anything. We think they will
be friends, it's just hard watching them play/fight since it looks very
real. What we really don't know is if the fighting is for real. Is
there anything to differentiate play fighting from real fighting?

	Any advice will be welcome.

2725.1What size are their tails??CLUSTA::TAMIRACMS design while-u-waitTue Aug 01 1989 08:4211
If your babes are short haired, it's easy. When Julie is really angry,
her tail bushes out and the hair on her back goes up. The tail can't
be missed...it sticks straight up and is real bushy. Otherwise, her
tousles with the other cats, in spite of the growling and whatever,
seem to be just kitten play.

What your seeing is normal kitten activity, even for littermates.
They'll soon learn to wash each others faces and they'll be buddies for
    life.

Cats always sound like they're going to kill each other :-)
Everytime Tym and Isis fought the fur would go EVERYWHERE!

My general rule of thumb is - as long as you don't see blood
    don't fret.
      Nancy :-)

The following was written about two years ago when I first got
Bandit. The note is 825. I just read it again... it brings
	back great memories.

	Karen

Well, I finally did it!! Last night I adopted another kitten
as a playmate for my very naughty 4 month old T.K. Bailey.

You have probably all read the adoption ad put in yesterday
for two kittens. Well, I adopted Bandit. He is a long haired
male (I hope), gray with white markings and he is so tiny!!
T.K. is 2 months older and 3 times the size. He has a very
sweet face and little white mittens, double pawed!!

Well, I got home with my new baby last night and the fun started.
T.K. was furious. Who is this little creep invading my home?
We put the kitten down and tried to give T.K. attention but he
wanted nothing to do with it and tried to bite us. He was
hissing at the little baby who wasn't at all afraid of him and
just blinked at him. Well, after a few minutes T.K. realized
that he was bigger than Bandit so there was no need to hiss
so instead he sat in front of Bandit and started slapping him
with his paw across the top of his head. Bandit didn't know
what was going on and so he just sat there and took the abuse.
Encouraged by this wimpy little kitten T.K. decided he wanted
a sniff. So he started sniffing under Bandits tail and licking
him there (hmmmmm) and Bandit fell asleep!!!!

For about two hours T.K. only wanted to sniff Bandit and to slap
him but shortly before I went to bed T.K. decided he wanted
to play. I was so afraid that he was going to kill the kitten
but Bandit just played back although he was getting creamed!!
Well I went to bed and when I woke up this morning Bandit was
asleep on the couch and T.K. was waiting outside of my bedroom
door for me. I went to take my shower and T.K. didn't come in!!
He always sits in the bathroom while I'm in the shower!! Instead
he decided that he wanted to attack Bandit some more and Bandit
was quite willing. Later while they were playing Bandit started
to meow so I picked him up and T.K. didn't realize where he went
so he started running around my bedroom searching and crying.
Bandit just peered over the edge of the bed at him and when T.K.
ran out to the living room yowling Bandit went after him. I
think this must mean that they are friends.

Some concerns and questions : when they wrestle T.K. makes little
chirping noises and meows the whole time while Bandit is quiet.
Why does he do this?? And second, T.K. won't leave him alone, I
mean he even attacked Bandit in the kitty litter. Bandit doesn't
seem to mind the fact that T.K. wants to walk around with him
between his legs though. I think that T.K. has decided that
	Bandit is his new toy.

Sound like we're off to a good beginning????

Way to go Nancy!!! It sure does look and sound that way - just
keep the vac handy, wear dark sunglasses in the house, put ear
plugs in your ears, and let them have at it!! Just think of it
this way, when you are gone and off to work, and they are alone,
and you come home at night and everyone is still alive and well,
why fret over it when you are there! It's hard - I still yell
and bellow at them when they (all 18) get a little too rough,
but then I say: 'whoever the hell you are, cut it out' - no
one listens, and I just go get the vacuum and clean up the fur!

Two weeks ago, my housemate brought Shnapps home and Coelura about had
a hissy. I expected them to react as they did, Coelura was feeling
threatened, hissed and growled, batted Shnapps. Wotta bully-ette!
Shnapps just took it all and now they're great friends, although the
combined fur-ball that occasionally comes through the room is a sight
to be experienced. More fun than the wide world of pro wrestling!

I still keep the squirt bottle handy, just in case.

I was telling this to Nancy in mail and thought I'd share
    	it here....we adopted my soon-to-be-brother-in-law's 10
    	month old Himmie.

Well already she thinks she's queen. And of course she hisses
and growls at the other three. Well our youngest, Duke, is
a brave little &^%$! Nothing phases him. Last night Chloe
(the himmie) was sitting in the middle of the living room
floor. Dukie wanted to go into the kitchen and in order to
do this he had to pass Chloe. No problem. He walks by her
and of course she hisses. He stops, turns around and gives
her this hysterical look as if to say "and just what the H*LL
is YOUR problem!!" I thought Cary and I were going to fall
    	off the couch laughing.

So far so good...no really major tiffs...yet!

Nope....Duke is our 5 month old all black kitten..

We thought it was an interesting name because he was the
runt of the litter and is kind of sickly...and Duke sounds
like it would belong to this big cat or dog!!

Please don't compare Gov. Regulakis to a dog; the canine species
is a greatly superior life form.
