I have a scratching problem with a 9-week old kitten and wondered if anybody could help me with it. His name is "Sammy", he is an affectionate tabby cat and he love to claw his way up my back when I'm washing the dishes, or claw his way up my legs when I'm sitting at the kitchen table. It is VERY annoying, I'm getting very scratched and he will eventually begin to ruin my clothes. I would also like to stop this behavior before he thinks it's a great thing to do and continues doing it when he 9+ lbs.!!! Anybody have any ideas? I'm a first-time cat owner. Oh... I also have two children who sometimes get subjected to the same behavior. Thanks!

Gee, sure sounds like VERY normal kitten behavior to me!!! Yes, this too shall pass - they figure out very fast how to get up high enough for hugs! Just crawl right up those jeans - the heck your skin! E.T.

Get a spray bottle and fill it with water. Keep it handy. Whenever he tries this antic (or anything else that is a *no no*) squirt him. They sure learn fast and you haven't hurt him. Worked wonders on Black Thunder on the *fly through the door* routine. Sandi

Gee, welcome to baby kittenhood! I used to joke that baby kittens came into this world with their claws extended and they didn't retract until they were 6 months old. Well, it's true! I used to deal with my five baby kittens climbing up my legs to get to the food dishes that were in my hands. They need lots of attention, and they use any means to get it! Carefully trimming his nails (just the very ends) makes it less painful for you, but discipline helps. He'll outgrow it soon enough. Just be glad he weighs 12 ounces instead of 12 pounds!! Hee hee! Coelura used to do that when she was seven weeks. It wasn't so bad when I wore new jeans, but anything else and it was murder! I finally implemented the "NO, NO, squirt" drill. The signal for "Hi, mom, you're Mount Everest" was that she would look up at me and stretch up, like a toddler wanting to be picked up. I would give her a sharp "NO!" She'd back off, but then she'd try again, which was followed by another sharp "NO!" and a squirt from my handy squirt bottle. It took a lot of attentiveness, consistence and patience, but at age three and a half months, it's a rare occurance now. But, um, she got declawed last week and immediately decided to take a leap for my hip and (I should be ashamed of myself!) I couldn't keep from laughing..... :-) Carol |
