| I just saw a product at SPags Garden shop which will supposedly
keep them out of the garden. I think it was a powder???

| Moth balls are poisonous so I'm glad that they aren't useing them.
Have they tried dumping GROUND BLACK PEPPER all over the place?
this works pretty well for about 2 weeks or until it rains.

| Thanks for the replies. I'll suggest the Pepper. My folks
live in Waltham so I don't think they'll be too thrilled with
driving to Spags, but I'll suggest it.
re: Moth Balls - what I actually recommend is wrapping the
mothballs in foil or some other wrapper and puncturing holes
in it so the smell can get out, but the animals can't come
in contact with it and it can't get into the dirt. I think
that's relatively safe.

| Nancy-
If Spags garden shop has it, I'm sure others will too. I go there
frequently anyway and if they can't find it I'll get you some.

| Thanks so much Michele. I just got off the phone with my Dad and
he says they're going to take a trip to Spags to find that powder.
I also told him about the Black and Hot,Red Pepper. I'll let you
all know how they make out.

2672.7 | Old pantyhose and mothballs? | BIGSUR::GRAFTON_JI | | Fri Jul 21 1989 17:36 | 7 |
| Someone else once mentioned putting mothballs in the leg-only part
of old pantyhose. If you cut the legs off, you can dump in the
mothballs and tie the stocking leg in a knot. I haven't tried it
myself, but it sounds like it might work.

2672.8 | at the risk of being labeled an organic gardener ... | WONDER::SKALTSIS | Deb | Fri Jul 21 1989 17:55 | 7 |
| Uh, if this is a vegetable garden, I'd be worried that some of the
toxic ingredients in the mothball/moth flakes/what ever would leach
into the ground, and could be absorbed by anything that you grew
there for the next n years (assuming that it didn't poison the
soil to the point that nothing would grow).
