| Their actually is a condition called "cat scratch fever". I don't
know much about it, just that the bacteria cats pick up on their
feet can cause the problem when a person gets scratched.
Anyone have more definite information on this? Apparently someone
in my office has had it so as soon as I can I'll talk to her and
ask her about it.

| Cat Scratch Fever is more than just a song!
Don't have a lot of details about it, but it does exist.

Having worked with a girl that developed a severe case of "Cat Scratch
Fever", what I remember is that her symptons were very similar to
pneunomia (sp?). It took the doctors some time to figure out what
was wrong with her. First they thought it was the flu (it was that
time of year), then as she didn't get better on standard flu meds,
thought it was pneunomia. It wasn't until that medication didn't
really work that they dug further. The final analysis was "Cat
Fever" (they left out the scratch), gave her the medication that fit
and she was fine within a week.
Since that time I have always made sure that cat scratches get cleaned
and some sort of first aid medication applied, just to be on the safe
side.

| I believe that the illness stems from germs or parasites that are
carried by the cat underneath their claws. When they scratch someone
or something, they release the germs into the bloodstream and, I
would guess, depending on someone's immune system and susceptibility,
that's when the trouble begins.
I keep reminding myself of this every time I get a paw in my eye
or a sneeze in my face (usually at 4AM)! But it still doesn't stop
me from kissing those feet and squealing, "Where have those little
paws been?!"
RE .0
I saw that show you referred to. I confess.I was slumming one night trying
to find something on the boobtube and there it was -- Cats On Trial!
It was on The Reporters on Fox Television.

I once had "cat scratch virus" -- the primary symptom was very
swollen lymph nodes in my neck and armpit. There was no medication
prescribed (though I was told to use aspirin to reduce the pain and
inflammation.
I suspect that there are a number of different diseases which cats
can pass along to humans...

At the CFA Annual two weeks ago in Milwaukee, a delegate brought
up "The Reporters, Cats on Trial" program before the delegation
as being very negative towards cats. Members of CFA have decided
to start a letter writing campaign to Fox to complain about the
show.

I accidently stumbled on to that segment and at first thought it
was a joke. Until they showed Cleveland Amory (of ``The Cat who
came in for Christmas'' book and GreenPeace). The show was
incredibly stupid and illogical (especialy the plaintiffs lawyer
also the reporter (Raffeal something?). This FOX channel are
sucking dry the crime investigation theme.

| FOX - that figures - the same Idiots who run Current Affair and
Most Wanted and COPS and all the other get-as-explicit-and-as-
gory-as-you-can shows. I HATE THEM! (the shows that is) I feel
that they are getting more and more sensational to grab as much
of the audience share as they can. And when people watch this
garbage they get "desensitized" to the things that go on around
them. This makes them less likely to react to things in their
lives! As far as I'm concerned this is crap and is doing a
disservice to our society.
(Ok, now off that soapbox....) You know, if anyone ever says that
cats should be banned because of cat scratch fever you might
first suggest they trim the cats claws or keep the cat indoors and
second remind them that cats and dogs have been the recipients of
far more cruelty and abuse from humans than they could ever return!

On the other hand, had you watched it, you might have seen that there
were folks that spoke out in defense of the cat, and those folks might
have opened some viewers eyes about some of the ways that cats add to
people's lives that they otherwise might not have known about, and now
might be sensitive too.

| re: -1 Excellent point Deb. Just goes to show me that there's
always something positive to be found.
I hope you realize that I wasn't singling out that show, nor
was I insulting the FELINERs who happened to watch it. Rather
I was expressing a fear over this general trend I see in FOX's
programming. I really do feel that as people watch more and more
explicit violence they become less sensitive. Its a defense
mechanism and it scares me. Its NOT an insult.
Boy I must really come across in an attacking manner. I'll have
to watch my wording.
