2588.0. "West Coast Party." by CIRCUS::KOLLING (Karen, Sweetie, & Holly; in Calif.) Mon Jun 19 1989 21:07

I thought I'd start the separate note for the West Coast FELINErs' party.
My house is in remodeling mode, so it's out as a site. How many of us
are there out here, and where are you all? I'm in Palo Alto, Calif.

I just put a note in the east coast party note. I would be willing
to host a party of the west coast feliners, but attendees be warned,
I have *alot* of kitties running around right now. For those with
allergies, it is BYOS (bring your own seldane).

I live in Morgan Hill and work in Santa Clara (WRO1).

Also, if held on a weekend, we could all go wine tasting!!! The
local wineries are very good, and only about ten minutes away.

Sarah's Vineyard, Fortino, San Martin, Live Oak, Kirigin, Guiglielmo,
and a whole bunch of others, including my favorite, which of course,
I can't remember the name of!

    Jo Ann,

If we have it at your house I'll promise to come help you. All
we have to do is figure out which weekend you're home.

A potluck of some sort is probably the thing to do. And a trip
to the wineries would be a blast too.

The whole month of August is out. Two many out of town shows.

There are available weekends in July, the 8th or 9th, July 15th,
even though there is a show the next day, I think it would be okay,
or the 22nd or 23rd. I am tentatively planning on going to Seattle
    the last weekend of July.

    Jo,

I vote for July 8-9 or July 22-23.

I have a clogging exhibition July 1 and and A's game July 4 but
otherwise that weekend is probably okay. Nothing planned for July
2nd or 3rd that I can remember. It is a 4 day weekend though so
alot of people may be out of town.

July 15-17 I'll be in Yosemite so please don't have it then.

July 1st and 2nd weren't listed as options, only the 3rd. I have
a show in San Fransisco on the 1st and 2nd.

I like the 22nd or 23rd, but I am waiting to see who will be able
    to come.

I guess I could be in charge of compiling the list for you if you
    like. So far it's:

    	YOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JO		Jo Ann Cordes Brown
    	SCRUZ::CORDES_JA		Jan Cordes

If we do a potluck perhaps we could get people to sign up to get
an idea of who is bringing what but that can probably wait till
we're sure of the date and if anyone is even going to be able to
    make it.

I'm fine for the July dates - any of them. Just let me know. I will
bring a couple of desserts:

Sour cream swirl brownies (we can't be good all the time!)

I cannot wait to meet all the furry critters I've heard about!

Okay, So now we have Jan Cordes, Dianne Wilde, SANFAN::BALZERMA (sorry,
don't know your first name), Ken (my husband), and myself, as well as
a maybe from Karen Kolling and Kim Apodaca. Anyone else here in California
that we are missing.

I think that the 23rd sounds good, but have to check my schedule at
home. Ken says that he thinks we have a cat club meeting that day,
so I will have to check it out and let ya'll know.

I may be bringing Dave McAllister (former feline noter) but we'll
have to wait and see what his travel schedule looks like, etc.

I've been away but now I'm back!!

I would love to come to the West Coast party!

I can make it the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd, although Jim probably will be
out of town. We've got a new Japanese Bobtail to introduce (Gwen), and you can
be sure I've got baby pictures of her (somewhere ;-) ).

This is exciting!! I can hardly wait to see everyone and to meet some new
FELINErs. I can bring a pasta salad (I got the recipe from Dian 3 years ago).
Morgan Hill will be wonderful, whether we try the wineries or not. I used to
live there years ago so this brings back good memories.

Jan, thank you so much for leaving a Voicemail message. I've been so wrapped
up with work and what-not that I'm still reading notes from 6/12/89. I
probably would have missed the entire gathering by the time I caught up with
FELINE.

This is going to be FUN!!!

Okay, Jo, the weekend of the 22/23 is it unless you tell us different...of
course, if you don't send directions, we can't show up, so you still have
some control...  8^}

Now, west coasters, get your cameras loaded and lets have lots of baby
pictures for the party..if I can just get Sam to SMILE instead of glaring...
and can someone hold Nicky long enough for a shot....where's Tabby???
Hannah, I ALREADY have your pictures! Well, okay, ONE more shot and then
go find Tabby for me....

I forgot to check with Ken to see what day of that weekend we are
already committed (to another party, not to an asylum ;^}) on.
I will let you know. The directions will follow once the date is
    set.

Anybody that wants to bring something, please send me mail so that
I can coordinate. So far we have Dian bringing yogurt/fruit (I
forgot the other choice Dian, sorry), and Jill will bring Pasta
Salad. Do we want to have it a "bring your own _______ (insert
your favorite bar-b-que entree here)" or shall I do burgers and
hot dogs? Any thoughts on the wine tasting?

I remembered the name of my favorite winery... Sycamore Creek, how
could I ever have forgotten them!!!

Jan,

Sorry about the address, we are on a cluster with alias, etc.....
If the cluster is up, THE780 is working so send mail there.

Wine tasting - I can't really drink anything but white, so it isn't
a priority with me, but I can have fun taking pictures anywhere.

Bring your own vs Jo cooking - how about having charcoal and grill
available and letting the folks bring whatever they want to cook - if
anything? Then we can all bring whatever salad, etc. we feel like
contributing.....Can one of us volunteer to bring throw-away glasses?
I'll bring along throw-away plates....now, all we need is some
beverages, napkins.....8^}

	I LOVE these things!!

    Dian,

That is exactly what I had in mind. We will set up the grill and
Ken can oversee cooking for those who don't want to mess with cooking
their own. That way, everyone can eat something that they really
    like.

I like the throw away plates and glasses idea! That way we don't
have to wait around for the dish fairy to stop by and clean up the
    mess! ;^)

These are all great ideas. If I remember correctly, Morgan Hill is quite warm
(read "hot") in the summer. A little wine spritzer sounds like just the thing
to bring.

Jim suggested we were to bring our cats, too. :-) Wouldn't *that* be a fun
bring-your-own party??

Jo, if there is anything you need help on, let me know. I can scoop garbage
after we're done eating into a garbage bag pretty quickly. And I promise not
to grab a kitten....well, I promise to try and keep my hands in my pockets
....well, I promise not to hold onto the kittens tooo long...
oh, well, er,..all promises are off. ;-) It's too hard to resist a kitten.

better have your cat detector working when we leave..8^}

We will have to do a kitten count before anyone is allowed to depart.
I currently have two litters in the house, a litter of four sealpoints
who are 12 weeks old now, and a litter of four blues and a seal
who are almost 4 weeks old now. The little ones are harder to steal
cause they still think that they should "sound the alarm" whenever
anyone tries to pick them up. Hopefully they won't have outgrown
that stage by the time you cat-nappers come over.

Jill, if you want to come over and do yardwork while I am at the

Did all of you know that Dian is the best cook there is? She cooks for fun and
reads all of those nifty _Bon Appetit_ and _Gourmet_ magazines. And then she
makes the recipes!!! If you're ever in the mood for some of the best goodies
you've ever had, ask for her chocolate chip cookies (with Ghiradelli chocolate
chunks in them) or her heavenly chocolate cake or mud pie or something--all I
know is that it's wicked and contains about 7 pounds of chocolate.

OH, DARN! Jo, I would *really* like to do yardwork for you this weekend
(*honest* ;-)), but I have to address wedding invitations, get my hair cut, take
naps, nuzzle the cats, take more naps, lay in the sun, and nap. I'm sure you
get the picture. Of course, if all else fails, I'll have to do my own yard-
work, laundry, and housework. Yuk!! I better go sleep on it first.

    Karen,

It takes me about 35-40 minutes from Highway 17 and Hamilton Avenue.
(I take 17 to 280 to 101) I'd figure closer to an hour from Palo Alto
(unless something is going on at the fairgrounds off of Tully and 101
which could add 20 min. to your travel time due to the backup that
    occurs there).

How does 2:00 pm sound to everyone? We are flexible to a point,
so what time would everyone like to have it?

    The directions:

Take 101 south to Morgan Hill. There are only 3 Morgan Hill exits,
use the second one, East Dunne Ave. Go *west* on East Dunne Ave
(or right for those of you who don't care much for that type of
directions). Make a left turn at the first light, Monterey Road
(or is it Street?). Make a right at the second street, Spring Ave.
This street is easy to miss. You will see a Round Table Pizza and
an A & W on the left side of the street, when you see them, you
are almost on top of Spring Ave. Go up Spring, past the cemetary
on the left, to the third street, Lone Hill Drive. Make a right
on Lone Hill Drive. My house is on the right, about 1/4 of the
way down and the number is 16640. I have a black Honda Accord
Hatchback that has my cattery name on the plates (MYSINHS) that
will be in the driveway. The house number is kind of covered by
a bush that went hay wire. My number is (408)779-0092.

Basically, bring anything you want to, but let me know what it is
so that I can fill in the holes. If you don't want to cook, we
can use paper plates, plastic cutlery, cups, napkins. Or chips
and dips or something like that. And....don't anyone forget your
    cat pictures!

    Hi.

I have a question I would like to put to those attending. During the
summer, I see my son (6 years old) on the weekend. I would like to
bring him with me but I do not want to create a stressful or
uncomfortable time for the rest of the partiers. What is your feeling
on children attending? If you feel it should be adults only, I
understand. He is generally well-behaved (especially on someone else's
territory and when threatened with death ;-) ), and he knows how to
treat animals (or he would be out of the house before you can blink an
eye). Let me know what you think so we can reach a concensus.
This is your party and you should feel comfortable so that
you can enjoy it but I would like to come and bring Steven, too.

    Thanks,

Having met your son once and seen that he is indeed a well-behaved
6 year old, it would not bother me if you brought him along. I know
that he would be under your watchful eye all the time. I hope that
he won't be bored with all the adult stuff going on though.

As the hostess, it is okay with me if you bring your son along.
He can spend time playing with the kittens if he gets bored with
    all the adult stuff.

Bring Steven along if you think he won't be bored....We will certainly have
enough food to go around if past experiences are any indicator...8^}

Thanks, everyone. I'm sure he'll be fine. We often bring along extra, quiet
toys and games when we know he'll have some time to spare. I just didn't want
to have any surprises!!

This is still going to be fun!!!

Next Sunday, 2:00 or so....I'll be there! By the way, I have some paper
plates, etc, that I'm bringing..but I think we'll need throw-away glasses
and some giant garbage bags for clean-up...

p.s. I EVEN have two pictures of Sam, the "mystery" cat, to show off!
He was nice about it because I told him he would be the best looking
black cat of any of the pictures....flattery always seems to work.

I regret to report that I won't be able to make the party. My
grandmother just had an operation on her gall bladder and at 70+
years old, we're heaving a sigh of relief and heading up to see
her the weekend of the party.
It sure was hard to make up my mind after the last reply about the
    best looking black cat! ;)
Payday and Freebe will always be the best looking black cats to
    me!!!

Due to the overwhelming positive response, the West Coast Feliners
party will be moved to the 30th of July. Same time, same place,
    same format, just different day.

It looks like we will have a very good turnout. I am looking forward
    to it.

If anyone needs more information, or more detailed directions, or
anything else, send me mail at WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JO.

Well, here it is the day before the party and I just got so excited
about getting my new pictures of Carrie developed that when I finished
picture #24 I quickly rolled up the film and took it out of the
camera only to discover that it was a 36 exposure roll of film.
Shows you how often I use this camera. So, I'm off to the 1-hour
photo place. Had I planned a little better I probably could've
saved myself a bunch of bucks by using regular developing.

Also, Kim Sarenius has given me pictures of Freebie, Payday and
Junkyard to show off at the party so don't anyone let me forget
    to do that.

Looking forward to a great time,

Here it is the day after the party and:

You cannot imagine how adorable a tumble of 4 week old Birmin kittens can
be until you see Jo's newest litter. Her 4 month old babies are wonderful
too...I want them all!! Jo was very careful to point out the minor
"imperfections" for each cat, but all I can see is the most wonderful blue
eyes and sweet dispositions -- obviously, I would not make a good breeder,
I am incapable of seeing imperfections in these critters. I fell in love
with them all.

We had a wonderful afternoon and evening of good conversation, lots of
kittens and cats, lots of kitty pictures, and great food....you shoulda
been there!

The only bad part of the day was when I got home - smelling like many other
cats and OBVIOUSLY having cheated on my jealous two....Hannah spent
all night on top of the clothes hamper, keeping those strange cats she
couldn't see - but she KNEW they were there - in that hamper and away from
me. This morning, I opened the hamper, turned it on the side, and let her
scratch through all the clothes to prove I hadn't smuggled in any cats!

I also met the little black baby that Jo is trying to place in a home.
This cat is beautiful! Midnight black, sleek, and so sweet....I am going
to get him neutered ASAP so we can find him a good home. I wish I could
take him, but the roommate says we are at cat max -- and Hannah and Sam
both agree. If anyone out there can help find him a home, let us know.
This little "midnight treasure" is really special.

Well, I certainly had a wonderful time yesterday even if by the
end of the evening I could do little more than lay around playing
with kittens due to the mass quantities of food and beverage that
    I consumed.

Weight Watchers is certainly going to get me this week. BTW to
all that missed it, if you ever have an opportunity to sample Dian's
sour cream brownies do it immediately...they were GREAT!

When I got home I had 3 kittie noses practically glued to my jeans
legs trying to figure where I'd been and who those kitty scents
came from since we all know that there are only 3 cats in the
universe and they all happen to live in my apartment. Only took
them 1/2 hour to figure out that it must have been Auntie Jo Ann's
15+ Birmans, 3 household pets, and 1 UBC (unidentifiable black cat)
    "Blackie O'Kelley".

So call them Feliner's brownies and it'll be ok!
2588.57FELINER'S BROWNIESIOWAIT::WILDEAsk yourself..am I a happy cow?Wed Aug 02 1989 15:2953
			FELINER'S BROWNIES

CHOCOLATE BATTER:

Melt 8 oz. bittersweet chocolate with 4 Tablespoons butter over very low heat
in a heavy saucepan, stirring constantly to avoid burning the chocolate.
(You can melt in the microwave if you have one - just do it at low temp
and make sure you don't "cook" the chocolate). Set aside to cool to
room temp.

Beat 3 extra large or jumbo eggs with 1 cup sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons
vanilla until they are well mixed. Stir in 2/3 cup sour cream, 1 1/2 cups
flour, 3/4 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and the
chocolate/butter mixture.

CHEESECAKE BATTER:

Mix 1 8 oz. package of cream cheese with 5 tablespoons butter and 1/2
cup sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in 2 ex large or jumbo eggs,
1/3 cup sour cream, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 6 level tablespoons of
flour.

MARBLE BROWNIES:

Grease a 13" x 9" baking pan very well and add 1/2 of the chocolate batter
and smooth out in the pan. Pour the cheesecake batter over the chocolate
batter and then add the rest of the chocolate batter in blobs over the
top. Use the handle of a spoon to swirl the two batters together. Bake
in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for approx. 45 minutes or until the
sides begin to pull away from the pan...ovens are different so watch it
carefully after 40 minutes.

Cool in the pan - completely cool. Frost with the sour cream chocolate
frosting.

FROSTING:

Melt 4 oz. bittersweet chocolate with 1/4 cup butter just like above.
Cool to room temp. Stir in 2/3 cup sour cream, 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla,
a pinch of salt. Mix in enough powdered sugar to make a spreadable
frosting (approx. 4 cups or so)...if you use a mixer, this will be
fluffier, but you waste a lot of frosting on the beaters.

	************ WARNING!! ***********

These brownies are not approved for diets of any kind.

HINT:

I use the WONDRA brand flour for these -- the grind makes the flour less
likely to clump and make lumps. I recommend it especially for the cheesecake
swirl batter.

Oh, NOOOOOOOOO!!!! You mean I missed *The* Brownies??!!! How am I ever
going to recover? Maybe I can quickly make up a batch. Yeah...that'll do
it.

Seriously, I am very sorry I missed this get-together. You can see how
far behind I am in reading notes. Things have been non-stop hectic since the
in-laws arrived a week before the Feliner's Party/West Coast.

I'm glad to be back (in FELINE, at least), and look forward to catching up
on all of the notes.

Jill

p.s. Jan, how do you spell Rocky's sister's name (Basra?)
