2545.1 | Man - the ultimate predator (look at China) | GERBIL::MASON | Explaining is not understanding | Wed Jun 07 1989 12:48 | 8 |
| I don't know the merits of this position, but I have long since
concluded that man has, by virtue of displacing much of nature's
balance mechanisms, made the automobile the principal predator in
most of the world. I only wonder how the volume of road kills compares
with (the original) natural predation. I suspect that as bad as
it seems, it is much less than before on the whole.

| I had a baby squirrel (now dubbed "Nutz") make friends with me 2
weeks ago. As I was mowing my lawn, two squirrels were playing in the
yard. I shut the mower off and approached. One of them boogied off
into the woods, but the other walked right up to me and followed
me around like a cat!
I feed it peanut butter sandwiches; it seems to like them.

2545.3 | my "pet" chipmunk | VIDEO::MORRISSEY | when you get drunk I'll be your wine | Mon Jun 12 1989 13:32 | 17 |

My parents have a "camp" in Winchester NH and I get up
there periodically on the weekends. Well this weekend
I made friends with "Chippie"...yes a chipmunk. My dad
had trained him to come and eat out of his hand. You gotta
make "kissy" noises for him to come. And he let me pet him!!
(or it could be a she) I was like a little kid. I haven't
had a chipmunk eat out of my hand since I was about six.
And they aren't a "petting" type animal. But he seemed to
like it....just sat there and let me pet him...then stuffed
his face full of peanuts, scurried around my legs abit and
then dashed off to store his food.
He's so cute!!

| Jack and I used to go into Boston Common with a bag of peanuts and
feed the squirrels. They'd come up on our laps and eat out of our
hands!!

| I've now trained two of my four turkeys to eat bread right out of
my hand. One of them is a little ambitious when it comes to bread
time; she sometimes gets away with half a slice with one bite 8*) !
They're both really careful when the slice is almost gone, and even
though they've "bitten" once or twice, it's always very gentle. Now if
I could teach the *other* two to be as trusting!
