| I agree, if you can, please try to find another friend for him.
He sounds so adorable, and it would be a shame for you to lose
him. You would suffer the pain, as much as he will. Please try.
I have two, and they sleep, play, and love each others attention
all day!

2500.3 | A companion kitty would compound matters. | AIMHI::HARTWELL | Seriously, I'm havin' fun. | Tue May 23 1989 17:37 | 8 |
| Thank you for your prompt reply. Unfortunately, I think it would
be best if I were to go with "a sure thing"...that is, giving Murphy
to a "good" family. You see, I don't know what other "issues" would
arise if I had two cats and then to end up having to "place" to
kittys would only compound my current problems.
Again, thank you for your prompt response. Oh, by the way, do you
have any leads for me? Thanks.

| My heart goes out to you....I wish I could take your Murphy, he
sounds so adorable. Unfortunately, I have two kittys but they both
have claws and I would be concerned for Murphy's safety. I will
do everything in my power to get you leads and I hope the people
reading Feline will rally behind you to help you through these trying
times.
Best of luck and please let us know how everything works out. I'm
sure that you will find a good home with all of these good hearted
people reading this note...

A cat without claws can live easily with a cat who has claws.
I've done it with no problem. Unless a cat hates another cat,
it will not use its claws on it. The most I've seen happen
when my cats are wrestling is they bite and kick each other
with their rear legs.
I second the idea of getting a cat buddy. My first cat T.K.
was driving me nuts just like yours was. I was (and still am)
taking two classes at night on top of working full time. When
I got home after work and needed to do homework I coudln't
get him off me. I got Bandit for him and the two of them
come to me for the occassional scratch on the head, or they
snuggle up next to me, but they spend most of their time with
each other.
You could always take one of the cats up for adoption in this
notes file on a trial basis. If, after a week, they hate each
other, return the cat. There are several cats up for adoption
now and it seems that most of them care enough to try this before
giving their cat to a shelter.
Good luck,
Karen

| I have two cats ... one with claws and one without.
It is not a problem.
Furthermore the one without the claws is "the boss".

| I second the suggestion of getting a second cat on a trial basis if
you can. A week is a short time for a trial, however, unless you're
lucky. In real life, it can take a month or so for them to become
buddies. Please consider this.

I considered sending mail, but figured that if I posted this you'd
be less likely to get multiple mail messages from other noters (I
got mail from several people about this when I posted my topic).
Mike Karp is looking for a home for his 2 spayed, declawed females.
His is the note (topic 2435) about needing to place his cats because
his fiance is deathly allergic to them. They're 12 and 4 years old.
One or both of them sound like they might be a perfect fit, and I'm
sure he'd be open to a no-obligation trial period. Declawed adult
cats are very difficult to place, as I'm sure you know.
Good luck,
Beverly

Here's another vote for a cat buddy.... I had to give away my two
kitties (Molly and Iago) at age 6, for what I thought was a permanent
give-away. They were gone 8 months, and I never stopped missing
them terribly. Then my situation changed and I was able to get
them back -and I'd NEVER EVER EVER give them up again. I was lucky
to get them back.... you never know when your situation will change
and you'll have the time to be a great mom! In the meantime, a
cat buddy could be GREAT!

| I'm with everyone else. Get company for your friend. At least
give it a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprized. And if
you take the second cat on a trial basis and it doesn't work
out, you'll certainly be no worse than before with one cat to
place.
I have a foster cat (2 yr old neutered male) who gets along
very well with my neutered male, but doesn't like the three
spayed females. He does have claws tho, so I don't know if he'd
be a good candidate. I can definitely offer you a trial basis
tho.
Personally, I think the 12 & 4 yr old declawed cats would be
perfect!
Good luck

2500.11 | second the second cat... | SUCCES::PEAKE | | Wed May 24 1989 11:04 | 13 |
| Yes, another cat would provide your cat with companionship
and interest during the day and during your absence. I got
Pounce (4 wks old from an animal shelter) and gave him to
Nutmeg (aged 2). At first it was hard but 2 weeks later they
played together. Now they LOVE each other and are very content.
Besides, from what you've said about your cat....I think he
loves YOU... Wouldn't it hurt him more to give him away?
Get him a cat pal!
Good Luck!

2500.12 | Another vote for cat #2 | MEMIT::MISSELHORN | | Wed May 24 1989 13:42 | 12 |
| Here's another vote for a second kitty. We got Brittany and Missy
to keep Melody company (and distract her from tearing apart
the plants) and the 3 of them are the best of friends. They all
like attention occasionally but are usually happiest when they
are chasing each other around and having fun.
And, I found that the 3 cats were not really any more work
than 1.
Good luck to you--I also know from experience how much you'll
miss Murphy once he's gone.

Hi there! I guess I have to throw in my .02 as well. My vote is
definitely for a buddy for your cat. After having had a wonderful
buddy like your Murphy, I think you'd find yourself missing him
more than you think.
I inadvertently got my Escho a buddy when I got my ex-roomate an
older kitten to help fill the void of losing her kitty 4 months
prior. How was I to know she would move in with a guy who bred
and raised mastiffs, who also had run of the house! After reading
notes in this conference, I seemed to have introduced them the _wrong
way_. I had a current clean bill of health for Brandy so I wasn't
worried about any diseases. I let him out of the carrier after
Escho had a good peak and sniff at him and bascially let them work
things out. They were eating together the next morning.
Escho and I really need the Brandy because I was working 2+ jobs
at the time, was home only to sleep it seems and Escho needed playtime.
I tried to give her quality time in the morning and at night but
she quickly wore me out.
Now I find that these two like each other and have accepted the
puppy we added to the _family_ last summer. Two cats aren't really
any harder to deal with than 1. I know that Escho AND Brandy aren't
lonely. We can even go away, leave them food, water and TWO litter
boxes and they don't destroy the place and are glad to see us when
we get back. (Escho used to do a number on the place before Brandy)
Sorry to be so windy but PLEASE consider a buddy first.
Keep us posted whateveer you decide.

Still another vote for a cat buddy. You'd be surprised how they turn
to one another for companionship. Another one or two cats isn't any
trouble at all. I also second the two declawed females mentioned
earlier. Sounds like the perfect solution.

2500.15 | Let's start again: A note from Muprhy's Mom | AIMHI::HARTWELL | Seriously, I'm havin' fun. | Thu May 25 1989 10:15 | 19 |
| Thank you all so very much for your advice and sincere concern for my
and Murphy's situation.
In my note, 2500, my need, is for a home for Murphy NOT another cat. I
understand that another cat would make Murphy happy (I had considered
this option before entering note 2500) but, it would only increase my
guilt and worry (note 2500.3 or .4) twofold.
Please respect MY decision to give Murphy up for adoption -- I have
thought about this for a long time, have weighed the options and have
made, what I believe to be, the best decision for the both of us.
Again, I appreciate your advice but, what I need more than advice is a
home for Murphy. As I mentioned earlier, any leads or interested
families may contact me at AIMHI::HARTWELL or (603) 673-7419 leave a
message as I, more than likely, will not be there.
Sincerely,
|

| Sorry to hear you have to stick with your original decision and
I wish you lots of luck. I hope you understand that our advice
was because we know how much cats can offer to their humans, and
also how difficult it is to find a good home for a cat. I hope
you find just the place for Murphy.
