2489.0. "First the bath, then the wrath..." by MPGS::MARGOLIS (Paula Beth) Mon May 22 1989 12:22

I've already asked one of my FELINE buddies offline, but I
thought this would be worth sharing.

Poor Tequila jumped into one of our water system tanks
a few weeks back. Thanks heavens we were home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have learned a verrrrrrrrrrrrrry big lesson from this...
We got her out within seconds, and gave her several baths.
She looked so great, we decided to bathe Schnapps.

So, now Schnapps is smelling wonderful also...The problem is that
Tequila will no longer accept her presence. She growls, hisses and
behaves as if Schnapps has just been introduced into the household.

Does recognition for cats (and other animals) solely rest of sense
    of smell?

2489.1Scent is important...SUCCES::PEAKEMon May 22 1989 12:4620
Sometimes, I think it does. After I bring one of my two
cats home from the Vets for a routine visit the other one
will growl and hiss like mad. You'd think they were going
to kill each other. It's because one smells different. His
or her old scent has been replaced by alcohol or something.
I have a solution to that problem and it works for my two
nuts. We have a little flannel cloth that either one have
slept on at any given time. I first rub that cloth other
that cat that did not visit the vets...then I rub it on
the one that did and even drape it over him or her. They
walk thru the house with if for a few minutes -- enough
time for the scent to rub off.

After that they are there old rotten loveable selves again.

Scent does play an important part in acceptance I think.

Well, I gave Tymothee-too a bath last night (boy does he look
great! he has the finest hair) and my girls still know who
he is and beat it to the nearest "safe zone" when they hear
    him coming :-)
