2487.0. "Humanitarian needs advice/help" by BRAT::GERMANN () Mon May 22 1989 10:46

    Yesterday at church I was talking with a woman who has a problem
    that I hope you can help out with (that's lousy english - sorry).

    This woman loves animals and has taken in several cats rather
    than see them be put to sleep. Well, some of the cats had kittens
    (they were pregnant when she got them) so now she has 13 kittens
    to place and several adult cats. That is not the major problems,
    though.

    She wants to have the females neutered. Her vet charges about $50
    per spay. She contacted the Friends of Animals for the low cost
    spay certificatesw and was given the impression that the certificate
    would not help much - that they allow for about the same charge
    for a spay.

    I have never dealt with the low cost spay program but I know some
    of you have. Can you give me an idea if she is right about the
    cost and, if so, is there another alternative for her.

    This woman is one wonderful humanitarian. She is giving all the
    cats and kittens wonderful care and is being very responsible in
    wanting to stop any further litters. I really want to help her
    out. She is a single parent (another job she is doing very well)
    and really can't afford to spay these cats, but will pay the price
    if she has to in order to do ther right thing.

    Any help or advice will be appreciated. Also, if anyone wants a
    kitten, she has lots!! And another litter due any day....

    Thanks

    Ellen

2487.1Nancy, where are you?NRADM::CONGERMon May 22 1989 12:486

    	low cost spay is usually about 30-35 dollars. Nancy DC has
    	the certificates, which she can send to you...

2487.2Screen recipients, and offer the certificates if they need themAPTECH::BLOCKBack in the High Life againMon May 22 1989 13:2318
	This woman sounds wonderful. Since kittens don't get spayed until
	they're several months old, how is she planning to handle it? Keep
	them until then? That sounds unlikely.

	I would suggest that she give the kittens only to people who promise
	to have them spayed, and offer the certificates to whoever takes
	them. That way, a responsible person who wants a pet but for whom
	the cost of spaying is a problem could do the right thing, and she
	wouldn't be out the cost of spaying for kittens she placed with
	those who could afford it.

	I wouldn't dream of taking her money for this; I can afford to
	have them taken care of myself. I'd rather see her spend it on
	those who wouldn't otherwise be taken care of.

2487.4FURTHER INFORMATION ON KITTENSMEMIT::ANKETELLMon May 22 1989 14:583
    I am interested in the possibility of kittens. How do I contact
    this woman for more information on her kittens.

2487.5I have applications for low-cost spay cert.CRUISE::NDCTue May 23 1989 09:0914
    Where is she located. I have two types of applications. :
    FOA which costs $33 each for female cats and $20 each for male
    cats. FOA has participating vets all over the US and I have
    the list of vets.
      I also have K&H spay applications. They charge $30 for the
    first two female cats and $25 per female cat 3rd or more paid
    for at the same type. (Bulk rates) Male cats are $15 each.
    The drawback to K&H is that they are much more restricted in
    terms of vets. Oh - they also offer low cost rabies & distemper
    shots.
      Send me your mailstop and/or call 297-2313 and I'll look at
    the list of vets and we can decide which is best.

    I just received a certificate from Friends of Animals. The cost to get
    a female cat spayed is $33, a male cat is $20. Nancy DC sent me
    hardcopy mail for K.H. SPAY. The cost for a female cat is $30 ($25 if
    3 or more females are getting spayed at the same time) and $15 for a
    male cat. There is a $2.00 postage and handling fee and justification
    is needed as to why you need low cost spaying. K.H. Spay will take
    about 4 weeks to get a certificate; Friends of Animals takes a couple
    of days.

2487.7Thanks so muchBRAT::GERMANNWed May 24 1989 00:1813
    Thanks for the information so far. I will let Arlene know this
    and contact Nancy as well. I am teaching the next 2 days so forgive
    me if I am slow to respond.

    Arlene IS a wonderful person. I admire her caring.

    At this time, she plans to only spay the adult females. It is her
    hope to place the kittens in good homes with responsible owners.
     She has placed some of the kittens already.

    I will try to update you on her situation soon. Thanks everyone!!!
