Note 2423.0 Cat in Tree for 25+ Hours No replies
WILLEE::DAVAULT "PLEASE DON'T CALL ME SUE" 0 lines 2-MAY-1989 13:14
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me or at least make me feel better about
the following situation.
Scenerio:
Yesterday morning at 10:00 a.m. my loving dog chased a cat up
a tree in my front yard. I've tried putting out food, coaxing,
etc., but the cat still won't come down. I did call the animal
rescue department in my town, so that if someone is missing an
orange & white cat they will know where she/he can be found. The
lady at animal rescue said that it was not unusual for a cat to
stay in a tree for 25+ hours. Additional info, my cat who is 1
1/2 years old climbed the same tree last fall but came down in less
than 2 hours.
Thanks for any help,
Susan

| The cat probably doesn't want to come down because it is quite sure
that your dog is lying in wait.
Monroe once climbed too high in a tree and was stuck up there for
two days. We called everyone we could think of, but no one could
help. The fire department said that he would come down by himself
and not to worry about it. They also said,"you don't see any little
kitty skeletons at the base of trees, do you? They always come down
eventually..." Well, they were wrong this time.
Monroe had injured his paw on the way up, and couldn't climb down.
After two days of trying to rescue him some other way, Ken bought
a huge ladder, and then climbed up to Monroe. Monroe was very
grateful, and never went near the tree again.
He also became in indoor cat shortly afterwards, but that is another
story.
Moral, you may have to help the cat down yourself.
Good Luck.

| How high up in the tree is the cat? Do you have a long enough
ladder? Our neighbors considered renting a "cherry picker" in
a similar situation. Please let us know what's happening.

| I agree that the poor kitty may have to be rescued.
My mothers cat, (won't tell you the name because it's
real bad, befitting an anwry cat...) got out by accident
the other day, and the very first thing it did was climb
the neighbors 50 ft pine tree...all the way to the top.
Then it got hysterical and began to scream... This
was going on for several hours. My father, a big softy,
got very concerned, and called my brother who ended
up climbing the tree and rescuing the cat, but paid
for it with a multitude of scratches the cat gave
him from fear. You may have to consider a rescue attempt.
Good Luck!

| Many years ago when I was living in an apartment in a house, Schnitzel
decided to climb a tree in the backyard, which was not unusual. She
went up, she came down. However, this one particular day she decided
to investigate some branches. These branches hung over a neighbors
garage....two story garage! I came home from work and heard this awful
crying. I called and called. Finally I saw her. There was no way she
was able to get back down. I called the fire department. They told me
they don't rescue cats from roofs... My landlord came home and saw the
dilema of Schnitz. Now, he always tried to make me believe cats were a
nuisance, but way down deep he was a softy. We tried all the coaxing
we could think of, but to no avail. He went in his garage, got a huge
ladder, climbed up, got on the roof as Schnitz had run back, finally
got her and carried her down. She screamed the whole way and had
firmly implanted her claws in his shoulder. I must say he was very
good about it, but also let me know if she ever did it again, she could
stay there!
There are situations where, like humans, the little furfaces panic and
just can't be coaxed down. They need assistance.

Mine got stuck up the front lawn tree the other day.. (this is
mumma who only goes out for about 20 min. at a time..) its awful,
because when they are stuck they look at you for help, you can just
feel it! I think maybe because she is an older cat.. she had the
guts to come down, then again she slipped and me who was standing
on tippy toes kissing this tree reached up and grabbed her - being
the mello type she didn't flip out and let me half carry/half drag
her down..
But, I have had young cats that got stuck up trees and roofs..
I can only put up with it for about two hours.. and then I feel
so sad I have sometone help me or climb the tree to get them down..
Usually they will come down, but I do agree that they need help!!
In the case of one kitty, the firt brantches (sp) were so high up
that I pulled my car up to stand on top of it and then get on a
branch and then get the kitty down... theres an idea..
How is the little kit doing today?

2423.7 | Sasha's been there | REDWOD::GRAFTON | | Wed May 03 1989 11:33 | 24 |
| One of our cats (Sasha) got caught in a tree last summer.
Unfortunately, we didn't discover it until 8:30 at night when we heard
this pitiful mewing outside our bedroom. Jim and I went out and called
and called, but we couldn't tell where she was. It was dark out, and
with so many trees, we couldn't decide which one she was in. We even
walked out in the river because from the way the sound bounced, we
couldn't even tell if she was on our side of the river or on the other
side. (That was when the crawdad thought my shoe would be a good place
to live. Yuk!) Rusty (our ginger cat) finally saved the day. We asked
him where Sasha was, and he climbed up the tree in which she was stuck
until we could find her with the flashlight.
Then the fun began. We tried and tried to coax her down with water and
food, but she would have none of it. The poor girl just sat there and
cried. Finally we got a ladder that we leaned against the base of the tree,
Jim climbed up as far as he could, and then I handed him the 2-foot cat
scratching post. He held it upside down so Sasha could reach the
wide base, and she finally inched her way down. All that time she
hadn't dared come down until she felt she had firm footing.
I haven't seen her in a tree since then. Instead she's content to
chase the others through the weeds and the ivy.

| The same situation happened to a neighbor of mine a year ago, and
I called the Humane Society in Bolton, and they came with a high
ladder to get it down, but by the time they got there, the neighbor
hood boys had climbed the tree for me, and got it down.....
we used a ladder to get up into the tree, because it was much too
high to reach the branches and climb the tree otherwise.
Good luck

| Our cat got stuck up in a tree last fall. She was really high up
(about 60 or 70 feet up there). She was up there for 2 1/2 days.
I called the fire department, the vets, the animal rescue league,
everyone I could think of.. But the people who came to the
rescue was the phone company of all people! They brought their
truck with the bucket, and one of the guys got in and had the other
guy raise the bucket till it was close enought for him to grab the
cat. It was great! What a nice bunch of guys, you might want to
give them a try.
