A silent prayer has and will be said from the first day I saw this
in the paper. Is there a fund being set up for them? The paper
wasn't sure when I read it.

I don't know of any funds being set up for them as yet, but I intend to
find out. I will post whatever I find out. Last night I put a note
in their mailbox offering what I could, blankets, clothing, food etc...
I called the fire dept. too and they had no information.
Thanks for joining us in the prayer.
I creid many tears myself as I had made friends with the cat Mindy
many times.

| Oh, how devastating.............
A house can be replaced. An animal cannot. I know how I would feel
if I lost everything (lost, hurt, angry, frustrated, etc).
My prayers are with them. I'm saying a special one for the animals.

| This is a terrible thing to have happened. My thoughts are with
them.
I often worry about what I would do to save my cats in the event
of a fire in the apartment. (Fire frightens me more than anything.)
I would like to have one of those signs to put near the front door
that says "Fireman please save my..." and has a box next to a picture
of a dog, cat or child where you can put the number you have in
the home. I can't put one up though because when I signed my rental
agreement it said "NO PETS". I've had my cats 3 years and even
though I've noticed that more and more cats seem to be around and
I've heard that the apartments are allowing cats now (with a fee),
I've never pushed the issue.

My thoughts and prayers go to this family.
This is the one thing that terrifies me to no end. The apt. I had
in Stow, MA used to have two children in the house. The parents
had put up fire-watch stickers (there's a fireman holding a child
in his arms; I guess you get them from the fire dept.) in the
windows of the childrens rooms. This alerts firemen exactly where
the kids rooms are. I put little stickers over them to say
*cats (2)*, in hopes if there ever was a fire my kitties might be
rescued.
I think I remember seeing somewhere that you could get pet stickers
but for the life of me I don't know where. Has anyone else heard
of this?
Please keep us posted about a fund.

The local humane society has them here. Until I got theirs, I
made some with a red border for visibility and a "In case of FIRE,
please rescue 2 CATS" note in large letters in the center.

| re: pet stickers
Tree House Animal Foundation sells them. I don't have the address
readily available but if anyone wants it send me mail and I'll
bring it in from home.
re: fund
I'd also be interested in contributing. Even if no fund is
set up officially, perhaps we could make a special Silver Lining
gift now or some other donation on behalf of the Digital Feliners.
Also, I have no problem in including the cats and dogs in the
Q4 Silver Lining Memorial Fund. Unless someone else objects, please
get me the names of the cats and dogs and I'll add them to the list.
Please pass along my sincerest sympathies and let your friends know
that they are not alone in their grief. Many of us are grieving
for their lost ones too.

| re: pet stickers...
The Digital Kennel Club just got a bunch of those stickers. They have
space to say how many dogs, cats, birds and others there are. The DKC
will sell them to non-members for (I think) $1.00. If you'd like one,
let me know and I'll see what the method is for distribution.

| Losing my cats in a fire is one of my biggest fears. I am grieving
for your friends also. This is a terrible trajedy. I am glad to
know that your friends were able to get out of the house without
being injured.
I agree that the lost pets should be included in the Q4 Silver Lining
Fund.
Please give your friends my sympathies.

Is the house on Mason Road, past McGettigan? If so, I live about a
mile away, and drive past it twice a day. I noticed the fire, and
wondered if anyone was hurt.

| My sympathies go out to the owners....when we had our last earthquake,
my main concern (other than wondering if the shaking would stop
soon) is how I was going to grab both of my cats (one of which just
sat up in the bed and looked around, most likely startled by the
noise, and the other, which I was more worried about, since she
had just run under the bed). My birds are in a cage--I figured
I could just grab it off of the stand on my way out, but the cats
are a bigger concern. What gets me is that I have no way to save
the poor fish...they are always the last on everyone's list....
Fortunately, I have a smoke alarm that is pretty dern sensitive...it
beeps/screeches when something in the over broils with smoke (like
a steak)....hopefully it would get me up in time to snatch up the
cats.

Don't you have carrying cases for the cats? Maybe a big one so
two will fit in it while you carry the bird cage in the other hand?

| Kim,
Since this is Earthquake Awareness Month I recently heard a gentleman
on Channel 7 News tell the audience that most people who get hurt in
an earthquake get hurt trying to get into or out of a building during
the quake.
He says:
If you're inside, stay inside. Try to climb under somthing
sturdy like a table or desk.
If you're outside, stay outside. Head for wide open spaces
if you can, like a parking lot.
Looks like your cat that ran under the bed had the right idea.
That's what both of mine did too. If I coulda fit, I woulda climbed
under there with them.

| I've heard that door frames are very sturdy areas and good places
to go during an earthquake too....but then, I'm from Boston and
don't have much experience with quakes.

2382.21 | These apartments probably weren't designed to shake... | JULIET::APODACA_KI | I'm here without a name... | Fri Apr 21 1989 14:30 | 27 |
| Well, a little off the topic of cats, but...
As the windows were shaking (surprisingly enough, this quake was
more NOISE than shaking--but the windows are old and loose and that's
what set us--me and my cats--off), and I was typically sitting there,
wondering a) should I find something to duck under (not too many
choices) and b) when and if it would stop and c) that I better get
something on my bottom half because I didn't want to be found dead
in my underwear, I eventually DID stand in a doorway. I reflected
upon the fact that the doorway was about five inches wide, which
is enough for the door, but that I am likely to be a bit wider than
that, and that also, since I am on the second story of an older
apartment complex, why in the world did I think a doorway was going
to save me when chances were, if anything fell down, it would probably
be the floor and me with it (right into the hallway of the apartment
below me). Granted, more people might get hurt that way (how do
they know, anyway?), but I would rather get my animals and me OUT
rather than tumbling some ten feet into the building below and with
another six feet of collasped roof on top of me.... :) Plus, I
can't fit under my bed.
Nancy, you're lucky. They are not fun (read; I HATE THEM). Should
I survive so long, I wish to move OUT of California.
Still, I did manage to pull on some sweats.... ;)

2382.22 | pillowcase | CIMNET::GLADDING | Noters do it with a 8-) | Thu May 11 1989 15:14 | 9 |
| I read somewhere that the easiest and quickest way to rescue your
cat(s) from a fire or earthquake is to put them in a pillowcase.
I know that would be quicker for me than trying to rummage through
my closet looking for my cat carrier (which they DESPISE and fight
to stay out of).
Anyway, just an idea in case the unthinkable happens.
