2381.0. "Catwalk - 40 Minutes" by TRUCKS::GKE (red, white and blueberry all under) Fri Apr 14 1989 04:46

Did anyone else here in the UK see 40 Minutes last night? It was
called Catwalk and featured a very popular X-model of the 60's who
now devotes her life to finding, neutering and re-homing unwanted
and stray cats. She is furious about the destruction of healthy
animals and gave up a glitzy & successful career to roam alleyways
in London saving frightened, sick and injured cats. She will sit
up all night with her cat box ready in some of the seediest parts
of the city to save a pregnant female or rescue a batch of kittens.

Her name is Ceilia Hammond and the programme was really thought
provoking and interesting. Nice to see someone giving this issue
the attention and devotion it deserves.

An aside, the programme said that here in Britain 2,000 dogs and
    4,000 cats are destroyed EVERYDAY!

I saw it. I was doing OK until the very end when she started to
cry because she couldnt get the pregnant cat to come out. That just
    finished me off.

I'll have to be a bit more observant next time I go to Waterloo

Some may call this woman a fanatic, but I think she is wonderful.
The care and attention these animals are getting due to her concern
and love for them is to me heart wrenching.

The next time I'm writing my animal charity cheques, I am going
    to remember this lady.

If you have an address for this woman I'd be happy to add her
to the list. I only send to places that folks suggest. The
final decision I leave to those who have lost cats during the
quarter. I'm sure they can figure out what to do with a
check drawn on an american bank.

2381.5She now has moneyUKCSSE::YOUNGGeoff YoungTue Sep 25 1990 11:0111
There was a little snippet in the paper this week about Celia Hammond and
    her work.

She has been left 186,000 pounds ($335,800) in the will of a man from
Cornwall. It appears he had never met her, only spoken to her on the
    phone.

She intends to use the money to establish clinics across the
country to neuter/spay strays and look after them.

Yup, and I hope she kills the stranglehold that the vets have on the
	RSPCA too.

	Heather

Which reminds me, I still don't have any answer from the RSPCA re:
indoor vs outdoor moggies in the UK - and I gave a 20 donation with
	my request.
