| If she DOES get one of these, I hope she understands the special care
they require. They are susceptible to all sorts of skin conditions, and
cannot be taken outside during extremes of temperature--both hot and
cold. And they MUST NEVER be allowed to be exposed to direct sunlight
for any length of time....since they will burn very quiclky!!

2292.3 | Maybe a Cornish Rex | PENPAL::TRACHMAN | | Mon Mar 13 1989 16:56 | 3 |
| Another solution would be a Cornish Rex - their coats are VERY VERY
short - they are similar to the Sphynx in looks, but have a bit
more hair.

| I have a picture of a hairless cat in my office. This cat is UGLY.
Most people think it's a bat. (Far too ugly to be a mogwie.)
You just gotta love something that looks like it was beat with the
ugly stick...

| Funny thing this should come up. The new issue of Cat Fancy
has a picture of a Spynx kitten in it. I guess that while
they are thought to be hairless, they actually feel more
like warm suede to the touch. The kitten was kind of
cute. It sort of looked like Dream with a crew cut!

| I, too, just saw the picture in the latest Cat Fancy. My first
reaction was "gross! Who would want a cat that ugly?" Guess
there's someone for everyone, including ugly cats. The caption
stated that they are actually not hairless, just extremely short
hair that feels like suede. And, what's another saying, "Looks
aren't everything." But they help!
Are these cats expensive?

| I have two cats with very long silky thick fur. But 3 times
a year we shave them practically bald. We leave them with a
lion's mane, and a pom pom tail. At first, the little one
thought something was stuck to his tail and kept shaking
the life out of it. He got used to the new way it felt. They
look like mutant poodles...sort of. We do this because the
hairball problems are enormous and allergies. My cats love
being bald, and NO ONE laughs at them, or they get thrown
out of the house!!!

2292.12 | Wrinkled cat! | SPMFG1::DOWSEYK | | Tue Mar 14 1989 16:19 | 14 |
| I was home one day last week and I saw a real live Sphynx on
T.V.. If there is no such thing as an ugly cat then..... it must
be a glowing milestone at the bottom end of the 'cute kitty' scale!
The more I looked at it the more I thought that it would have
been a nice looking cat if it had a coat. I think I would have a
hard time getting used to gray and wrinkly. I also would have a
hard time dealing with the idea of a $1,200. cat.
Maybe I can't understand that kind of cat, I go for big fuzzy
shelter cats with lotsa extra toes.

2292.13 | Warm and weird | CGOO01::LMILLER | Now try it once more ...... | Tue Mar 14 1989 16:53 | 11 |
| We had a couple at a show up here sort of on exhibition. The lady
was from France and she let us hold and touch it. Very strange
feeling, very much like suede, but very warm. The weird thing is
you could see its points on the skin, ie like a shaved kitty, and
they are classed by colour (sort of).
This one was very relaxed, and obviously used to being oohed and ahhed
over. From a personal point of view I don't think they are any
ulgier then the REXES, sorry to insult any breeders. One of my
good friends is a DEVON breeder, I am just not partial to that type
of cat.

| Ugly?? Did someone mention my Julie??? I still can't look at her
funny-face without cracking up. But, I gotta tell ya, that cat in Cat
Fancy has Julie beat by a mile.... I guess I love that long, long
Himmy fur. Honey wants to have Julie fitted with a wig and a good
plastic surgeon!

| i agree that Sphynx's aren't the most beautiful cat I've
ever seen - but they seem to more than make up for it in
purrrrrrr-sonality. The ones I've seen at cat shows are
very affectionate and seem to have alot of character.

| I had a chance to actually handle a sphinx once. It was the infamous
"E.T." who belongs to CFA judge Joan Benson and her husband. E.T.
had a very warm, suede-like feel to his skin, but the weirdest thing
was that he also had B.O. (as in body odor). He was perspiring
under his legs and around his neck. Bill Benson says that the
perspiration is a result of the higher body temperature and is normal.

2292.18 | Rexes are really nice | REFINE::TAYLOR | "Hug me, I purr!..." | Wed Mar 22 1989 10:29 | 15 |
| RE: quite a few back.
The Rex is another type of cat that is very nice. It's not that they have a
very short coat, but they only have an undercoat. No top coat at all. I
thought they were kind of ugly at first, too. But then I got a chance to pet
one. Their coat feels just like cotton. It is so soft!! THeir purrsonalities
seem to vary. I have seen rexes that have been very nasty, and I have seen some
that are so affectionate, it's unbelievable. I kind of like them, actually.
There is one altered Cornish rex being shown right now that is beautiful. He's
black and white. You're never going to believe his name.

| If any of you are going to the Chalet Show in Concord, I will have
my Rex baby there - Terror - he is something else purrsonality wise.
You can see for yourself! Ugly, you think? Hmm. Special, wonderful,
lovey, crazy, warm, cuddly, fantastic, human, etc., but not not
ugly! Terror is a brown classic tabby - maybe a "little" strange,
but not ugly.

Nah, not on your life. Of course, I have a white Oriental Shorthair,

| RE:.19
Somehow, at least to me a Rex is a whole lot nicer looking cat than
that Sphinx I saw on T.V.... That was the first, the only cat that
I would have a hard time liking. And the bit a few notes back about
the B.O....
I've never been to a cat show, but now I know I have to go to one
and meet some of these special felines one on one.

2292.23 | Terror Zhivago DOES sound a little strange.. | PENPAL::TRACHMAN | | Thu Mar 23 1989 09:44 | 13 |
| Well, yeah, I know. What can I say? He was so wonderful when I
met him that I took him name & all. His Gramma & Grampa have a
line of cats that "depict their purrsonalities" - Beast is Terror's
daddy. Get the drift! From what I hear, some Rex have nasty
temperments, but the line from this breeder have WONDERFUL
temperments - sweeter than sugar!
Terror is entered as an Apparent Purebred HHP in the Concord NH
show - Misha and Sasha are also entered - should be VERY interesting
as these three have NEVER BEEN SHOWN. sigh
