2273.1 | she had no home | FRAGLE::PELUSO | | Tue Mar 07 1989 09:06 | 18 |
| UPDATE:
Well I finally saw some life @ the house I suspected she lived,
and talked w/ the guyes who lived there. It seems she showed up
about 10 days ago and they were feeding her outside, but because
some of the guyes have allergies, they would not let her in the
house. They suspect someone droped her off because it is a real
wooded area.
Well I still feel sad that this happened, but at least I can sort
of put the thought that someone's loved one was missing and that
sort of thing, she was just another unwanted pet.
I told them if any other strays come around to let me know (probably
a _big_ mistake, but atleast I could try to find them a home instead
of letting this happen again....

| I know just how you feel! When I was in high school, I saw a similar
incident with a little puppy. Actually, there was quite a bit of
traffic around the high school and one day I saw this little lab
type puppy get hit by a car. The man actually stuck his head out
the window and laughed at what he had just done!!! I went over
and got the poor pup out of the road, it was still alive but bleeding
from the mouth and ears. The poor thing was so afraid! One of
the teachers called the humane society and I stayed outside with
the pup to make sure he didn't run away.
I don't know what happened to the pup once they took him away but
it was a that point that I realized how little compasion most people
had towards animals. I was the only one who insisted on staying
and helping and it was only because I was making a big fuss that
the teacher called the humane society. Everyone else was willing
to let this poor creature go off on his own, hurt and bleeding!
To this day, I just can't understand why some people just don't
care! Where are their hearts, their emotions? Oh well, enough
gloom and doom, I'm just glad that I have found a forum where there
are so many people who DO care!

| I don't understand it either, but consider the sad fact that alot
of these people would also pass by a human body too, 'cause they wouldn't
want to be 'INVOLVED'!
If there is reincarnation, I hope any person that hits an animal and
then laughs about it would come back as that animal. Justice would
be served.

| Michelle -
I know exactly how you feel. More than once I have stopped and
moved the body of a dead or barely dead cat off the road so that
he wouldn't be hit again. It wouldn't have made any difference
to the cat as it was dead by this time, but somehow it seemed dis-
respectful to leave the poor thing in the road to be further dis-
figured. Twice I've done this when the cat was still moving - not
alive, but still moving - meaning some A#$Hole just hit it and took
off.
I believe that everything you do comes back to you. it keeps
me sane.
and if you're all wondering at how many uncaring people there
are in the world - take a good look around you. Most of the world's
problems stem for that selfish, cruel and uncaring attitude!
I believe this is exacerbated by shows like COPS and CURRENT AFFAIR
and all that sensational crap! It further desensitizes people.
Keep up the good work - I really think that this world's survival
depends on caring and the good works that come from it.
I'm glad we have each other.

| A long time ago I passed a cat that was in the road, I drove on
a little to turn around, came back and went to the cat. The cat
was alive and not to badly hurt (enough so that he would not have
made it of the street in time). I asked a woman to call the Humane
Society or the Dog Officer...both of them said that they could not
come becuase the animal hit was not a Dog! I sat on this womans
front lawn for an hour, with my coat wrapped around the cat and
freezing my but off. All of a sudden the Dog Officer drove up and
took the cat from me and brought it to the vet. She told me that
a lot of people had called about the scene that they had saw and
wished that someone would help me.
I later found out that the cat was fine and had suffered a broken
leg. He was hobbling around in no time.
I would not hesitate to do this again.
I cringe everytime I see an animal (any kind) that has been hit
and left to die....I don't think these people would appreciate it
if we did the same to them.....but what goes around comes arround
right?
Thanks for the file...it's the best!

well...... we are in the feline file but this morning I
had the sad experience of having to be the one to see this beautiful
shepherd (very large) laying in a gully on the side of the road.
By the look of his facial expression he did not die a quick death.
So I called him in and the animal control officer had already been
looking for him for half an hour. I guess I have good eyes lucky
me. At least someone else had the decency to call. Their were
kids right across the street (I don't think they could see him)
waiting for a bus having a good time. The contrast between the
two sides of the street were just too much for me.
So I've been wishing all day that whomever hit that dog -and
I find it hard to believe you can hit a very large shepherd that
hard and not KNOW it:
1. Has severe damage to their car that they'll have to shell
out big bucks on.
2. Their conscience eats away at them so much they start to
lose it.
3. And they come back reincarnated as a dog ending up the same
way.
People sometimes really bite the big one.

I had a terrible experience in this area also.
I was driving home with my two little sisters(12 and 15) in the car.
I saw two large puppies playing in the road up ahead and was very glad
to see the car in front of me slow down. But instead of stopping when
he got to the puppies he proceeded at a relatively slow speed and ran
over one of the puppies with his rear tire. My sisters and I saw everything
including the look on the poor puppy's face as his back was broken.
It seemed to be in slow motion.
What makes me so mad is that the guy had kids in the car too and didn't even
stop to see if the puppy was OK. I stopped to drag the puppy out of the road
so that the other puppy wouldn't be hurt hanging around his brother.
It was sad to see this little puppy, that was having so much fun a minute
ago, dead. It was worse to see the other puppy try to wake him up to play
some more, and I hated to think that people driving by thought I did it!
The three of us cried all the way home and we cringe just a little more
than before when we see a dead animal on/by the road.

| I don't understand how people can hit an animal and drive off.
If people gave a seconds thought to how terrible it would be to
be hit by a car - they may be understand how thoughtless they are
when they drive off. It is sad how limited people can be.
However, here are times when it is impossible to stop due to traffic
conditions-but there are plenty of back roads too!
I once saw a "hit and run" with a cat. My husband and I stopped
to move the cat off the road. We also stopped by several of the
homes in the area to find out if the cat belonged to one of the
families - but to no avial. I was suprised too that the town would
only send someone to pick up the poor animal if it was dog. I don't
get the logic in that.
It is worth the sadness it causes when you stop and take care of
an injured or dead cat or dog, because you give them the dignity
and respect they deserve.

| Last summer I was taking my niece out to dinner when we found a
cat lying in the road. I stopped my car, got out, found the cat
to be still alive. I told Kari to pull the car off the road and
point the headlights onto the cat so that I could see. I took a
blanket out of the trunk and started walking back to the cat.
At that moment, a truck came towards us from the opposite direction.
There is no way he could not have seen the cat, or me, or the blanket,
or the fact that I was trying to save the cat. He swerved from
the opposite side of the road, ran over the cat, almost hit me and
then took off down the street. As soon as I realized that he was
*trying* to hit the cat, I ran start towards him waving my arms
and screaming. I chased the truck for a few yards but couldn't
get close enough to see the license plate.
My niece was in the car in hysterics. I tried to comfort her first,
then I picked up the now dead cat, wrapped her in a blanket and
got back in the car. The cat was wearing no collar so I didn't
know what to do. She was a beautiful longhaired calico and I could
tell that she must have been someone's pet because her white paws
were sparkling white, and her coat was clean and matt free.
Kari waited in the car, still crying, with the cat, while I knocked
on doors. I couldn't find the owner. I ended up taking the cat
to the humane society. It broke my heart to just put her in the
bins with the other animals that had been hit. But I didn't know
what else to do.
That was the absolute worst night of my whole life. I am sure that
Kari (who is 17 and lived with us at the time) will never forget
it either. She was very depressed for several days afterward, and
would just break out in tears every time she thought about it.

| I'm sitting here with tears coming to my eyes.
I hit a cat once, and kill me if you want, did not stop. The people in
my car convinced me to go on. It was a young cat that looked like one
of my own. It was an unavoidable accident and to this day I get upset
everytime I think about it. How could I have been so cruel not to stop
and apologize to the owner? I wouldn't want it done to me.
My neighbor's cat was hit by a car in our condo development a few years
ago. My husband (then boyfriend) and I found Bonnie in the road. She
couldn't have been dead for more than 5 minutes. She was still very
warm, limp, and had not yet started to bleed. I stopped the car, ran
to her, and cuddled her crying my heart out. I rang my neighbor's door
but she didn't answer. I held Bonnie till I was done crying, left a
note on the neighbor's door, and wrapped her in a blanket and put her
in a box in my garage. The neighbor called me at 4:00am when she woke
up, went to call for Bonnie, and saw my note. She was so happy it was
me who found her and cared for her. Bonnie was definitely special cat
and had even won the Morris Award once.
I just wish (still) I had done this for that one cat oh so long ago...

2273.12 | sometimes the system works | CIVIC::JOHNSTON | OK, _why_ is it illegal? | Wed Mar 08 1989 16:10 | 69 |
| If I may be forgiven another dog story...
Several years back, I was driving home from the airport with my
sister when the car in front of me swerved to hit one of my neighbor's
dobermans. [the neighbor and I were nodding acquaintances only.
we lived a ways out in the country about a mile apart].
She bounced off of the slime-wad's fender into my windshield causing
me to nearly lose control and my sister's collarbone was cracked
from being thrown forward against the shoulder-harness with excessive
force.
Upon seeing the commotion behind him, he burned rubber out of there.
Wendy had gotten a partial tag-number which I told her to write
down immediately along with whatever she could remember about the
car. I went to check out the dog. She was alive and in some pain
and not at all nice -- offering to rip off whatever portions of
my anatomy I might place in range -- understandable, but intimidating.
Wendy put my flashers on and got out to sit just out of range while
I went to tell my neighbor. The neighbor immediately jumped to
the conclusion that I had hit his dog, but I pointed out that unless
the dog was a real jumper, more than my windshield would have been
damaged had I been the culprit. He got the point.
Anyway, the dog lived although she lost part of her foot and had
damaged reproductive parts that would no longer produce gorgeous
prize-winning puppies [my neighbor was a breeder; the dog was a
bitch in heat who'd let herself out having gotten tired of waiting
for Mr.Right...dobermans are crafty and big enough to make it pay
off].
With the partial tag-number and description of the car, we found
the slime [he had vanity plates which made it easier]. He also
had a doberman-sized ding in his fender which eliminated all doubt.
The law enforcement persons went after him with a vengence!!
Because he had purposely aimed at the dog, he was prosecuted for
Cruelty to Animals, Felony.
Because the dog had hit my car causing substantial damage to the car
and injury to my sister and he hadn't stopped, he was prosecuted for
Attempted Vehicular [sp?] Homicide, Felony.
Because the dog was part of my neighbors breeding stock with a stunning
record for quality offspring, the Court entertained a motion to
sue on lost revenue grounds.
In addition to some time in jail, fines, my car repairs, and my
sister's medical expense, he was hit with _all_ court costs and
a civil judgement of $25K payable to my neighbor.
I, personally, do not believe that the dog would have produced $25K
worth of puppies in her _life_, let alone that late in her career.
However, I have no quibble with the judgement. Although I received
no recompense from the court [nor did I seek it], my neighbor did
see his way clear to pay off the accumulated vet charges for my
transient menagerie -- his reasoning being that had I not been there
to have been hit by his injured dog, he would have had only a dead
dog.
I just wish the guy had spent more time in jail. While he was there
he was assigned to clean up after the guard-dogs. Oh, how poetic!!!

Mary,
No Mary please don't feel that bad about it. If you
would have been in the car by yourself chances are you would have
stopped. We all learn by our mistakes :^). I've done some pretty
rotten things to my fellow creatures when I was younger and easily
influenced but those memories only serve to make me push even harder
to do alot more good to try to make up for my folly earlier in life.
Smile you obviously are a very nice person and human just like the
rest of us :^).
Have a nice day and take the load of your
shoulders.....

I hope you did not feel my note was directed towards you, because
I don't blame you. It's possible that this kitty was in a similar
situation, and the driver or a passenger wanted to stop, but for
what ever reasons didn't, or maybe they didn't know they hit her...
I just could not stomach the bimbo's attitude and they looks I got
from people as I was trying to move the cat...It was really upsetting.
Please don't feel bad....

your story MADE my day. I hope we see more of that happening to

these people treat other people?), they really deserve it.

2273.17 | "There are no mistakes, only lessons" | CRUISE::NDC | | Fri Mar 10 1989 08:13 | 26 |
| If making mistakes spurs you on to do more good then something
valuable has come from it. (I'm looking for that silver lining
again)
As long as we all learn from our mistakes and try to turn
them to something positive, then we shouldn't keep beating
ourselves with them. The real crime is in not learning, for
then we are doomed to repeat those mistakes.
To quote the rules for being human:
Rule 3. "There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process
of trial and error, experimentation. The 'failed' experiments are
as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately
"works".
4. A lesson is repeated until it is learned. A lessn will be presented
to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have
learned it, you can then go on to the next lesson.
5. Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that
does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons
to be learned."
If anyone wants all the rules - I rather like them - send me mail

The other thing you have to worry about is the IDIOTS out there that
get a big charge out of purposely trying to hit an animal with their
car. I remember in high school a real MORON who used to brag about
how many dogs he has hit with his truck. He considered it a sport!!
Approx. 5 years after we graduated he was killed in an automobile
accident. Ironically it was a hit and run!
What goes around comes around..... The universe doesn't "forget"...
