| Boy, I bet she earned a few other choice nicknames while that was
happening.
You must have looked cute in the fireplace. Pretending to be Mrs.
Santa Claus??? Soot is SO much fun to clean up.

| This is not about a cat, but it IS about a fireplace. When I was
barely 2 I say "santa Claus" in the chimney complete with beard.
I finally convinced my parents to come (ie. humor me), over they
came and there was a muscovy duck tail hanging down from the damper.
My father opened up the damper and out came *santa* and carried
soot all over the downstairs. My sister and I were amused. I do
not recall amusement on the part of the adults.
So cats (even Smokey) are not always the hazzard. What is it called
in a court of law ........ an attractive nuisance?????

2249.5 | my fireplace incident | CGOO01::LMILLER | Now try it once more ...... | Mon Feb 27 1989 15:10 | 21 |
| I arrived home from work one day to an absolute shambles, stuff
was knocked off the dining room hutch (welsh dresser), plants down
and out for the count. My first thought it was a break in but on
further investigation ....
My three cats were sitting on the kitchen counter (where they are NOT
allowed) staring into space. I also looked up and guess what ....
a large thrush was perched even higher on top of the cabinets. I did
what every self repecting person does in these matters .. shouted,
waved my arms etc. This compounded the mess, as the bird flew around
the house, letting "loose" on everything that it could and its lunch
evidently consisted of blueberries. I ran to get my neighbour,
who is a SPCA employee, who had enough common sense to remove the
screens from the window (it wouldn't go out the door), while I fended
off the cats, the bird left. I was such a wreck, I made the poor
fellow follow me around to find out how the bird got in. As we
approached the fire place the evidence was for all to see......soot
everywhere (on closer look it was on our tabby and white as well).
I don't think the bird knew how lucky it was .... at least I didn't
come home to bodies/feathers ... only some very disappointed faces.

Hi everybody, just back borrowing this account to say hello...
About 14 years ago my wife and I had the same problem regarding
chimney chasers.... we had just moved into an apartment with a spare
room with an open fireplace and were asked to take care of a ginger
tabby longhair called Jamie while a new home was found for him (this
only took about two years...8^)} ).. to get him adjusted to the
new place and keep our existing 4 quiet we installed him in the
spare room with his own water and food. Later that evening we went
in to check on him and found no trace whatsoever. By eventual
elimination we decided that he must be up the chimney (small clues
like some soot in the fireplace... bit of a give-away...) we called
up the chimney but no result and eventually phoned the previous
owner of Jamie to come over and see what she could do.... finally
got him down and spent next two hours washing and drying the poor
frightened little soul... couldn't have been a short-hair I suppose...
never mind... what we all go through...

p.s. Still checking through all the back notes and replies but as
I'm in New Hampshire (Merrimack to be specific) for a short while,
can I ask if anyone is arranging another visit to the Hunan Gardens
( now that I've found out where it is)...??? if so let me know at
the above address....
Best wishes to all... and especially the furries friends...

| Well, not quite never. PITA is a shorthair (korat). And all gray at that!
I guess I got lucky in that respect. It could have been Tabbatha, who is all
black (I would have had 3 gray kitties) Or even worse, Seasea who is a cream
and white tabby shorthair or Michaela who is a golden tabby persian!!
