2199.1 | Tuna juice only? | CURIE::SADLER_TEMP | | Fri Feb 03 1989 13:26 | 6 |
| My cats get just the tuna juice drained from the can. Do y'all
think this is sufficient?
Cathy
(Well, _alright_ maybe just a little tuna with it...)

| Unfortunately, a lot of dolphins are killed in the nets used to
catch tuna. This is only a problem with certain types of tuna,
however. The other types of tuna don't run with dolphins, or something.
A store I shop at only carries "good" tuna, with a posted explanation
about this. Alas, I have forgotten which type of tuna this is. I
will try to remember when I go shopping next and post the info.

| I have read in this file that oil from Tuna can be harmful so if
you are considering giving it to your cat, you might want to look
at the notes that discuss it.

2199.4 | tuna? | CRUISE::NDC | | Mon Feb 06 1989 08:44 | 9 |
| re: .3
Personally i can't understand why anyone would eat tuna packed
in oil anyway! Argh!! the calories!!
re: .2 Anyway, I've been trying to find tuna that hasn't been caught
by the fishermen who kill the dolphins. Its been so long since
we've had tuna. I read someplace that Deepsea brand tuna is ok,
but I can't find it. Can anyone help me?

| I'd appreciate hearing more about the ok tuna as well -
wouldn't want to think that we're contributing to the
deaths of dolphins, as they're such beautiful animals.
We've just recently discovered Figaro cat food, and
the mew-crew *loves* it! I'm not sure if it comes in
other varieties, but I get the large cans of tuna and
garden vegetables for them. It's packaged by Bumble-Bee,
and it even smells good to me.

| RE: Figaro
Yup - that went over big in my house over the weekend!! The kitties
loved it. Even T.K., who hates moist food, pushed the kittens out
of the way for a taste.
As far as I know, that's the only variety sold. If you live in
the Wesboro area, B.J.'s has cases for $6.48. That's only .27 cents
a can. I paid 3 for $1.00 in the supermarket.

2199.7 | C/D taurine! | USEM::JOHNSON | | Mon Feb 06 1989 14:42 | 9 |
| I understand that C/D has all the taurine that cats need.
That's what my vet said.
I talked with Tiger's Bob about taurine and he confirmed
that C/D was the food Tiger was supposed to have started.
But ....... too late!

2199.8 | I'll check with P.E.T.A.... | CPDW::MCDONOUGH | | Tue Feb 07 1989 10:12 | 22 |
| The tuna that's packaged for cats is Atlantic Bluefin Tuna,--the
"real" tuna.
The "tuna" that's packaged in the U.S.A. for HUMAN consumption is
usually "PACIFIC ALBACORE".
The PACIFIC ALBACORE is the bad stuff!! The reason why is simple.
Dolphins (Not the fish...the PORPOISE!) typically run above schools of
albacore. What the fishing boats do is key on the Dolphins, encircling
the albacore in their nets, and at the same time capturing the school
of Dolphins. Instead of working the proper way and allowing the
Dolphins to escape, they simply round them up and in the process
they drown dozens to hundreds.
P.E.T.A.(People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and GREENPEACE
have active campaigns against this typr of abuse. I'll write to
P.E.T.A. this week to see if they DO approve of any tuna companies.
They MAY approve of some American companies. I know that they are
totally against using tuna caught by South American boats, who have
been seen killing Porpoises indiscriminately and have even threatened
bodily harm and death to international observers who are supposed to
report this type of abuse to international regulatory bodies.

2199.9 | taurine increased in most foods | VAXWRK::DUDLEY | | Mon Feb 13 1989 16:33 | 5 |
| Before everyone feels compelled to go out and stock up
on tuna or clam juice, my understanding is that most of
the major commercial cat food manufacturers as well as
Hill's added taurine to their food in response to the
research results.

2199.10 | tuna juice can be harmful... | FRAGLE::PELUSO | | Thu Feb 16 1989 08:50 | 7 |
| My vet has told me that too much tuna/tuna juice can be harmful
to the cat. It has a high amount of iodine or something( this was
2 years ago - my memory is pretty bad for this kinda thing)....maybe
magnesuim...anyway...he said as a treat once in a while would okay,
but not regularly. I also agree w./ .9....most major food companies
add it to the food, so the average healthy cat wont need all the
extra additives.

How did you discover this? Is it documented somewhere?
