2198.0. "ACTON EMERGENCY CARE" by MORGAN::MISSELHORN () Fri Feb 03 1989 10:25

Have any of you ever had occasion to use the Acton Animal
Emergency Care Clinic on Route 2A?

We have called them a few times late at night (they are open
24 hours) just to check things and have always liked the
friendly, caring way they talked to us.

Well, last night Melody was acting like she had a case of
cystitis so once again, I called them. They said that in a female
it probably wasn't at a critical stage but to bring her in if
    we would like.

I can't stand to see any of my babies suffer at all so off we went.

Well, we were VERY IMPRESSED with the service, interest and care
    that Melody got.

The doctor's assistant took the basic information and Mel's
temp. Then the doctor came in.

Her name was Dr. Albert and she was a cat lover which endeared
her to me and Melody (who is not easily endeared to anyone having
been abused in her prior life). She picked up Melody, hugged her
and KISSED her and called her "Princess". My "mama's baby" snuggled
right up to her. Dr. Albert has 30 cats and definitely has "the
    touch".

Aside from that, she was an encyclopedia of information on cystitis,
cat stress, and cat nutrition (of which she is constantly researching).
We could have stayed all night just talking to her.

We have always loved our regular vet but, if Dr. Albert had her
own practice (which I am going to check on), I would switch the
cats to her (she admits that cats are her favorite animal) in a
    minute.

I would be interested in hearing of anyone else's experiences
    with Acton Animal Emergency Care.

Incidently, the rate for a visit go up after midnight--a fact of
which they informed me on the phone and suggested that I come in
before to avoid the increase. That also impressed me since they
were more concerned with the animal than with the money.

2198.1I've used themFSHQA2::RWAXMANA Cat Makes a Purrfect FriendFri Feb 03 1989 12:1715
When I lived at home with my parents, I noticed late one night (around
midnite or after) that our dog, Sasha, was bleeding on her leg.
It was a nasty cut so my Dad and I took her to Acton Emergency Care
for treatment. They were wonderful! Kind, patient, caring, and
overall exuded a genuine love for animals. It was so long ago that
I don't remember what they charged us but it didn't matter anyhow.

I have called them a few times when my regular vet wasn't open (late
at night) and they have always taken the time to listen and offer
advice and assistance. I would recommend Acton Emergency care in
    a heartbeat!

2198.3$44 hairball, but it was worth itBPOV06::FOLEYAnne of DECUSMon Feb 06 1989 14:1712
I've used Acton Emergency Care a couple of times and have found
them to be very competent, informative and NICE.

We had one very sick kitten, that they brought back to life, in
my opinion. Then there was the $44 hairball. I thought my Seamus
was dying. The woman vet was very nice and did not laugh at me
when she gave me the diagnosis.

They are wonderful to have around when your regular vet is unavailable.
They warn you of the extra cost, which is very fair.

2198.4Another Good experience at Acton EmergencyCSG::MYERSWed Feb 08 1989 10:5129
I too, have had a very favorable experience with Dr. Albert at the
Acton Emergency. She was so caring adn was just wonderful when
I brought in a sick kitty which we subsequently guessed had been
hit by a car. She had a broken tailbone and thankfully was ultimately
OK but they are a great supplement to our regular vet. You said
you were interested in seeing if Dr. Albert had a private practice
and I agree, she'd be wonderful. But I thought I'd just mention
to you someone who is very much like her, in case she doesn't have
a private practice... He is Dr Greg Baron of Westford and he doesn't
have an office so he just does house calls. He is really wonderful.
The house calls are just the cost of a regualr office visit so
they aren't more expensive (as you might suspect). He's a young
fellow and a real animal lover--speaks sweetly to the kitties, cuddles
them and is very caring. He also has been very good about phone
consultations whenever anything a bit strange is going on and is
good about giving me advice over the phone. Plus the convenience
of coming to our home at night rather than schlepping the cats to
a vet is great and less traumatic. He works weekends at the Wakefield
Animal Emergency Hospital, which I can also recommend for emergency
care for anyone living near Rte 128. If your cats need neutering
he can do it there on the weekend for you--like a Friday night,
which is nice so you can be home to observe and take care of them
during the weekend. And if they ever need X-rays or hospitalization
Greg recommends either Acton or Wakefield. If you want to get in
toucch with him, his home is 692-9297.
I know it's very taxing when your kitties are sick so we feel very
lucky to have had such good experiences with both Dr. Baron and
Acton Emergency/Dr. Albert. Good luck with whomever you choose.
