| Well, considering that they are poisenous to cats, I'd suggest that you
use a non-toxic cat repellant like GROUND BLACK PEPPER. It loses it's
effect after about a week, so you'll have to replace it frequently. But
at least it is non-toxic.

| Your lucky that Jasper only thinks he belongs on top of the mantle.
My Elmo (used to be a Jaspar) thinks that he belongs on top of the
bird cage. The poor birds.

| Of course, with black pepper on the mantle, it will look like you NEVER
dust...8^}
If he likes it there, why not get some non-breakable mantle decorations
like woven fans or something, leave a nice space for Jasper and enjoy
the decoration he provides....If I was his size, I'd like it too...
It is nice and warm leaning against a chimney when the fireplace is
lit.

2192.4 | be careful of fumes inside the house | TOMLIN::ROMBERG | Kathy Romberg DTN 276-8189 | Wed Feb 01 1989 13:00 | 7 |

I tried using mothballs to keep my kitties away from places
where I did not want them. It did the trick, but also gave me
incredible headaches whenever I was home. I seemed to be sensitive
to the napthalene fumes. I got rid of the moth balls, aired the
place out and all was well (except the kitties went back to their
original behavior). I decided to work around the 'kids'.

2192.5 | A suggestion | WFOV11::GONCALVES | | Wed Feb 01 1989 14:09 | 7 |
| Try putting down alumninum foil. I know that my two can't stand
being around the stuff. It bothers them. It only took a few
days and then they didn't go on my fireplace mantel.

| S&H are mantel cats. I have a few things on the mantel, but back
against the wall. They have never knocked anything off.

2192.7 | A lemon? | CADSYS::GIL_PASSOLAS | CADSYS::GIL_PASSOLAS | Wed Feb 01 1989 17:00 | 12 |
| A couple of months ago we bought a new wool carpet that Mosa took an
interest in re: claw sharpening. I took a whole lemon out of the fridge,
set it on the rug -- she wouldn't go near it (or the carpet). The odor
must linger because after we removed the lemon, she continued to leave the
carpet alone.
If you don't mind a lemon on your mantel, you could try that. Might look
like a piece of art actually.

2192.9 | try balloons | FRAGLE::PELUSO | | Thu Feb 02 1989 12:54 | 14 |
| try balloons, blown up to the point where they almost burst. Nippa
was broke of her counter habit this way. she would hop up and try
to swat the ballon off, however with her nails, they would pop,
and scare the life out of her...she has never been up there since
( knock, knock). It works well, because we could never see her
do it, therefore never be there for repremanding.
M & N
p.s.
the balloons wwere taped to the counter so they wouldnt roll off,
and she would have to use some effort to removce them, hence being
assured of breaking them.

| Thanks for all the replies. I will try these suggestions.
Since he only does his high act when we're asleep, I say let
him have his fun and we'll just take the stuff off the mantel
each night. But, Mom doesn't like him up there at all. So,
we'll try some suggestions. She did try the mothballs in the bottom
of a flower arrangement, but Jasper took care of that smell by
booting the whole arrangement on the floor. Then I took the moth
balls out, because they made me nervous anyway. So, we may all just
end up trained by him, who knows.
