2167.0. "Amnesia?" by WFOOFF::GONCALVES () Fri Jan 20 1989 14:13

    I have a question......

    Can cats get amnesia?

    We have this problem with our siamese male, Mijo. This past
    Saturday my dad and husband brought in big sheets of sheetrock.
    I saw that Mijo got spooked and ran into the kitchen. I know
    that he didn't get touched at all by the sheetrock.

    Anyways, to make a long story short, we thought that he got
    out. We looked and checked all over the neighborhood and
    in everyone's backyard that is adjacent to our's. No Mijo.

    Of course we we feeling pretty low and didn't do any housework,
    i.e. dishes, wash, etc. We spent 9 hours looking for him.
    No luck. As we were out of food in the house, we decided to
    go grocery shopping. As we were putting away the food approx.
    9 p.m. Sat. evening I looked down and saw our female. I turned
    around and the next thing I knew, I saw our male.

    He crawled through the space between the dishwasher and
    the counter. Our male is approx. 12 lbs. and this space is approx.
    2 inches. He pushed himself inside. But the thing is, he
    didn't cry at all. We looked into that hole first thing with
    a flashlight and we couldn't see him.

    Now that we've got him back, he's got a small cut above his
    right eye. We figure it's from him pushing himself into the
    hole for the dishwasher.

    Our problem now is that he's not himself. He used to be the
    bully and now he's afraid of everything. He's now sleeping
    on top of our kitchen cabinets and he won't come near us.
    It's been almost a week now, we are being patient. That small
    cut didn't bleed and barely shows.

    So now to the point of the whole note, can cats get amnesia?
    We're worried about Mijo.

    Thanks for being so patient to read through this note. Any
    answers will be appreciated.

    Oh yea, what I forgot to say, I'm glad that we didn't run the
    dishwasher. He would have gotten hurt worse.

    I have the vague recollection that dust from cutting sheetrock can
    be somewhat toxic to cats. I may be completely wrong. Another
    possibility is that if there was remodeling going on in the house,
    he might just be freaked out.

2167.3changing the environment can spook themTHE780::WILDEAsk yourself..am I a happy cow?Fri Jan 20 1989 15:2010
Approx. a year ago Cat Fancy ran an article about how changing a cat's
environment by adding things or taking things away can "spook" him/her
for awhile (read awhile as meaning until the cat has forgotten the
thing has been changed). The article recommended (quite unrealistically)
that you don't ever change the environment or if the cat spooks on
you, quickly change it back...although that is the ideal answer, it
simply isn't always possible. If you cannot change the environment
back the way it was, you simply give lots of love and reassurance and
the cat will gradually get back to his/her ol' self in time. This
sounds like the situation you have, so I'd give it time.

    Put yourself in his place ..... in a tight spot, scared ..
    He's bound to be spooked for awhile. He was probably
    scared out of his mind. Talk lovey to him ... he should
    come around.

    Keep us posted. Poor baby !!!!!!!!!

2167.5maybe it's your punishment!LAIDBK::RESKELife's a mystery & I haven't a clueMon Jan 23 1989 15:0714

    I'm sure with lots of patience and love and a little time he'll
    be ok. Is he eating ok?? It may be possible that he is punishing
    you for upsetting his house by doing all of the things he knows
    he shouldn't. Mine have been known to do this type of stuff when
    I go away for a few days but they usually get over it in a matter
    of hours. If it keeps up, maybe a visit to the vet might be in
    order (but then I'm overprotective).

    I know it must be possible for them to get amnesia though. Yesterday
    my little Rocco must have had it because he sat on my lap for over
    20 minutes before he remembered he hated to do that. ;^)

2167.6Back to normal, almostWFOV11::GONCALVESTue Jan 31 1989 16:3813
    The latest.....

    Mijo is back to normal. Thanks for all the responses... Mijo
    is still afraid of strange noises and people.

    But he's getting back to normal. Some new toys and a lot of
    affection has brought him around.

    Thanks again!!!!
