2163.0. "Looking for Burmese kitten" by BUFFER::LI () Thu Jan 19 1989 16:35

    My fiance Mark and I currently have one furry-face (Tashti). Since
    both of us work during the day, we thought it would be nice to get
    Tashti a little friend sometime this spring. Tashti is now 6 mo.
    old and we ideally want him 9-12 months old when we get our new
    addition.

    Since realistically, our limit is two cats and we plan on having
    them both for 15+ years, I have my heart set on a Burmese kitten.
    Does anyone out there have information on breeders or how else to
    get them? I don't plan on breeding the kitten so pet quality would
    be ideal (save some big $$$ too!). Any pointers would be greatly
    appreciated!

    Thanks in advance to all you feline lovers!
    Ruby, Mark and Tashti

2163.2Kittens commonly sold at cat shows?BUFFER::LIWed Jan 25 1989 13:2311
    Elaine,

    Thanks for the reply! Is it common for breeders to bring and sell
    kittens at cat shows? I may try to make the Dorchester show, but
    I was really hoping to get the kitten in March/April time frame.
    Do you think it would be just as easy to find Burmese kittens at
    cat shows then?

    Thanks!

2163.3Call the breeder before the showYOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JOWed Jan 25 1989 13:5520
    Kittens are occasionally sold at cat shows out here in the west,
    but not commonly. Most breeders would rather sell them from their
    homes so that they can be sure that the buyer isn't making an impulse
    buy. It is easy for spectators to get caught up in the excitement
    of a show, and decide on the spot to take a kitten home. Not always
    the best situation for the buyer, kitten, or breeder.

    Things may be different out on the east coast. If Elaine could
    give you a recommendation it might be wise to call the breeder and
    find out if she will be at the show, and if so, will she be bringing
    any kittens that will be available to you. That way you have indicated
    your desire for a kitten prior to meeting her at the show.

    Also, out here there are not alot of Burmese cats at the shows.
    I am not sure if it is wide spread, but I have heard of some problems
    within the breed. Litters tend to be small. We often have shows
    with no Burmese present at all. Calling ahead would help you avoid
    disappointment when you get to the show.

2163.4Try and go to a show if you canPENPAL::TRACHMANZhivagoCats, Ltd..The Inn is Full..264-8298Wed Jan 25 1989 14:0715
    Well, there are usually a few cages with "kittens for sale" at
    every show. Spring is really a better time - more kittens
    more variety - almost all the shows in march & april have
    kitten cages. Yes, I think it's best to meet the breeder
    first, but you can also meet them at shows, see what they
    are showing, etc. Make an apt. to visit their cattery, etc.
    Try to make a couple of shows - Dorchester in January,
    Narraganset, RI in March, Concord NH in April, Plymouth, MA in
    April, Portland, ME in April, Cranston RI in April. Give me
    a call if you want more specific information.

    If a burmese breeder has no kittens at the show you are visting
    she/he can take your name - so it's good to at least make contact.

2163.7Will try to make showBUFFER::LIThu Jan 26 1989 16:1110
    Thank you all for the information. I'll try to make the Dorchester
    cat show this weekend and one or two others in the spring. April
    would really be a much better time for us to get a new kitten anyways.

    I've never been to a cat show before, and I look forward to it!
    If any of you meet any Burmese breeders, please let me know!

    Thanks!!!

2163.8Burmese Breeders informationBUFFER::LIMon Mar 13 1989 17:1031
    Well, we just put a deposit on a sable Burmese kitten this weekend!
    For future reference, I thought I'd enter the information I got
    from the Boston Cat show about Burmese breeders. Both these breeders
    had winning Sable Burmese cats entered in the show.

    I was impressed with these folks. They care a lot about quality
    breeding and have only a few litters a year. They also will not
    sell their kittens to just "anyone". It's a mutual interviewing
    process. Their litter of 6 week old kittens are already sold (not
    leaving until 12-14 weeks old), but they have another litter of
    very tiny kittens (that I did not get to see) which should be
    available.

    I did not get a chance to see any of her kittens, but she said she
    had a litter 6-7 weeks old which could be seen.
