2159.0. "HELP! baby kitten in heat..." by SSGBPM::DISALVO () Thu Jan 19 1989 13:59

    Hi, I'm new to the notes file, I have a four month old kitten named
    Bandit, she's already in heat. She's not scheduled to get spayed
    for another two weeks, is there anything I can do in the meantime
    to make her more comfortable - she really seems distressed and
    really miserable.

    Suggestions would be much appreciated!

    Hi Linda,

    I went thru this with Meg before she could be spayed. I'll bet
    she's driving you nuts, and she's probably feeling not to swell
    herself!

    I really didn't do anything for Meg, except giving her extra petting
    and attention (which she absolutely demanded). It only lasted about
    8 days for Meg, but she did seem really miserable.

    Poor baby!

    I remeber when Portia was in heat. She was trying so hard to get
    outside - it was miserable trying to leave for work in the morning.

    My advice would be to keep her as far away from the doors as possible.
    You don't want to take any chances.

    Good Luck

    Katie is in the same situation now. Sure improved our relationship!
    Now I have to be careful every step, because she is on/around/under
    my feet every second. Fortunately she is going in next week.

2159.4A Massage might help.MEMIT1::MISSELHORNFri Jan 20 1989 08:4815
    Brittany went into heat during her 5th month. (Can you believe
    that I, a long time cat owner, took most of the day to figure it
    out--I just wasn't expecting it that young!)

    One thing that seemed to help was when Bruce, my fiance, would
    carry her around on his arm, palm up, with her back legs straddling
    his arm and her chest/front paws resting in his palm. She would
    just sit there for as long as he could do it (eventually his arm
    would fall asleep).

    It really is awful to see them in that state and not be able to
    do anything about it. Massaging Brittany's underside helped too
    when she stayed still enough to have it done!

2159.5That's real young!SALEM::DEFRANCO_JFri Jan 20 1989 08:517
    Wow! Isn't 4 or 5 months a little young for a kitten to go into
    heat? I thought they had be at least 6 months. My Cali was 10
    months when I had her spayed and she hadn't gone into heat at all
    during that time. Guess I was lucky!!

    Different cats mature at different rates. Our Birman girls generally
    get their first season around 5 or 6 months. There is something
    that you can do to make her go out of heat but I hesitate to mention
    it here. Send me mail and I will tell you. It is not for the faint
    hearted :^o!! Grooming, massaging, etc., around her hindquarters may
    make her more miserable since it is stimulation (of a sort :^})
