Can anyone provide information on "at what point in time" you can be confident the color of a cat's eyes and coat are set? More specifically, I purchased a Maine Coon kitten who will be one year old in three weeks. If you read up on this breed, it is often stated they are slow maturing (requiring typically three years). Now it has always been apparent to me that cats "thicken" out (as opposed to stretching up) in the 1-2 year range. But I'm not too sure about color. I'm also puzzeled by how delicate his feet and legs still are, considering he is a purebred (father a master grand champion -- a Carol Pedley cat), and that a distinct coon trait is rounded/sizeable paws (under *sturdy* legs!). Any opinions/info on stature/color maturation are welcome. Thanks, Diane

At one year old, his coat color and eye color is pretty much set. As for his legs being finely boned, that may change a bit as he gets older. Cats tend to "thicken up" a bit as they mature. Main Coons are similar to Birmans in being slow to mature. This generally means that they don't reach their adult size and stature until they are two to three years old. It really is true. Once he is three he will be a moose! Jo |
