2080.1 | Resistance builds with exposure! | SALEM::DEFRANCO_J | | Wed Dec 21 1988 12:50 | 20 |
| It's funny about cat allergies. If you expose yourself to certain
cats you can actually build up a resistance to them. I to am allergic
to cats but have 3 of them. The youngest, I have only had for 2
weeks and I am still sneezing and breaking out in hives from her.
It will take a few months of this aggravation before my body builds
up resistance like it has with the two older cats. I also find
that daily grooming along with passing a damp washcloth over their
fur helps tremendously. Also, never touch your eyes after touching
the cat.
So....maybe you should let the cats up stairs for a few months and
maybe your husband will be able to adjust. If not, maybe he could
see an allergist. No one likes getting allergy shots but I hear
they work quite well on cat allergies. Good luck and I hope you
don't have to give your babies away!

| As I have mentioned elsewhere, I have four cats, and am allergic
to them (as well as everthing else) and have asthma to boot. My
respiratory system is basically a walking time bomb! I've pretty
much adjusted to them, but they have to make a concession of sleeping
in the basement at night so Mom can breathe. They seem to feel it's
a small price to pay for a house full of love!

| I was in Erikson's Monday and saw something (that I think was a
shampoo, but it might have been a food supplement) that was speficicly
for use on cats that owned people that were allergic to them (they had
a similar product for dogs).
Has anyone else seen or heard of this stuff (or even know what I am
talking about)?

| There was a small article in the latest issue of a cat magazine
(I can't remember if it is Cat Fancy or Cats Magazine) about some
product that sounds like .3. Worth checking out. I don't have
the magazine in here with me, perhaps some one can find it and post
the name of the product?

| RE: .1
Jean - your statement about never touch your eyes after touching
your cat is so true! I, too, am allergic, and if I touch my eyes
after petting any one of my guys, they blow up to twice their size
and itch like crazy (my eyes, not the cats!). And it takes a long
time for the swelling to go down.
The things we cat lovers go through in order to keep our furry
friends!

| and I thought we were nuts! My husband is also allergic to cats
and has asthma. We have four cats. We didn't know his allergies
included cats until earlier this year when he had scratch tests
done at the allergy clinic. At that time we had three cats. I
was rather alarmed and asked him what we were going to do. I was
afraid he would say that we had to get rid of the cats! He just
said "well, I'll just take my medication" and later suggested
we use some of our income tax return to buy a scottish fold. He
really loves cats and figures that the rewards are worth a little
discomfort.
Its nice to find other folks who feel the same way.

| I too got over cat allergies! The way the whole deal got started
was when someone I was working with broke up housekeeping and had
to find a home for a wonderful cat. I acted as go-between, and found
a home for Hamden. Then the people that were going to take him changed
their minds. Since I made a commitment to find him a home I took
him with the idea that I could still find a good home for the poor
guy. It was summer and he was an indoor/outdoor cat, I thought that
I would not have that much allergy problem if I stayed a distance from
him. In a week or so I got so attached to him that I could not part
with him. By the time cold weather came and he was spending most
of his time inside I was over most of my cat allergies. I was glad
that I 'recovered' so well because Hamden became a lap cat, bed
cat, under foot cat, etc. He could not stand being apart from me
for one minute. It's good I grew to love him because the together-ness
sometimes drove my nuts, a pet can be too loving.
A year ago Hamden went on to his reward. After a few weeks I decided
that a house is not a home without a cat. Lucky has been with me
for 10 months now, and my cat allergies have never returned.
I wish that I could find such an easy formula for other allergies
I have. And I do hope the same thing works for others, There are
so many catless homes and too many full shelters.
