I am considering buying a cat perch - a contraption that would
hook onto the window sill so that my indoor only kitties could
sit in the window and watch the outside world. I have only seen
one once (the cat perch not my kitties :^) !) and that was about
12 yrs ago in Chicago. I have called around and Breeders Pride
knew what I was talking about and have some in stock in Marlboro
MA. My question is will they work? Do any of your kitties have
a perch? I have double hung windows, Andersen, I was wondering
if they work on all windows or just certain types?
Any experiene out there? Right now, with the cold weather and the
windows shut my cats can't sit in any window expect a north facing
picture window and that causes the back of my sofa to be covered
with fur all the time!
Thanks,
Kathy

I have a cat perch and both my cats love it. The male (Morris)
took to it faster than the female (Mindy). Morris is a good size
cat so the perches are quite sturdy.
The perch that I have slips into the little tiny space between the
window and the sill and has a removable cover for washing. Morris
loves to sit on it and stare out at the bird-feeder.
I got mine from one of those mail order catalogs.

I bought a "Kitty Purrch" as they are called, for my sister's two
indoor cats. They took to it right away! Call the following number:
800-524-0820
That is the number for Cherrybrook, a wholesale catalog in New Jersey.
You can order a Kitty Purrch for only $14.00, plus shipping and
handling. The ads in the cat magazines charge around $21.00 plus
shipping.
As far as I know, they fit in any type of window.

I have a kitty perch also, but the only problem is, I can
only use it in the cooler months when the windows are closed.
Otherwise, if the window is open, the "grip" doesn't hold
on (it fits in between the sill and closed window).
I tried it once with the window open, and my poor cat fell
down with the perch crashing to the floor - scared both of
us to death!

Last I knew MILES KIMBALL catalog also had them. I have to put
a "spacer" under ours due to overload - 14 pounds and still growing.
If you can put it over a heating unit they really like it!

My brother built a couple perch's for our two darlings and are quite
sturdy. One of them is the single cat model the other is a double
which doesn't go over too well with Wiskers cause she's a snot and
likes to spread out on the double. Figuero is quite heavy and he's
forever on one of them (except when it's nap time). All this from
two pieces of wood and a carpet scrap.

I have one of the hook-on-to-the-sill perches, and the cats think it's
the greatest thing since catnip. They all jumped up to sit on it within
seconds of its installation, and looked at me as if to say, "It's about
time!"
There are some problems, however:
1. As mentioned earlier, if the window is open there's nothing to hold
the perch in place. (I nailed mine to the inside of the sill, but it's
still not as secure as if it were properly anchored - a consideration
when you have lots of fat cats.)
2. The kind I have has a rubber-tipped support that braces against the
wall. I soon found that it rubbed a hole in the wallpaper because it
slid a bit each time the cats jumped on or off; also, if the wall is
plasterboard, it can make a hole in the wall. I padded a piece of wood
and placed it under the support to protect the wall.
3. The perch I have is a bit on the small side for my 13-pound cat, who
can't quite stretch out on it for a snooze. And if two (or more) want a
window seat at the same time, it gets very cramped...
So... yes, perches are worth getting, but I would really like a
better-engineered, larger one than the one I've seen in the catalogs.
<Bing! Just figured out what to ask Dad to make me for Christmas!>
