Any suggestions on how to take a vet shredder to the vet and actually let the vet examine her, and touch her? I had asked him about tranquilizers but he didn't think it was necessary. All the talk about worms and bad breath lately has made me concerned. He just gives her a shot and sends her on her way (I pay $40-$50). I think I should be getting more for my money, however Nippa is a problem... Michele ( & the Vet Shredder)

How old is Nippa and why is she/he going to the Vet in the first place. Your Vet sounds like a doctor my mother had many years ago. Sandi (Lightning, DejaVu & Thunder's mom)

Nippa is about 2 1/2 yrs old, and she is in need of her shots and stuff. I just wanted to know if the vet could try harder to look at her (he thinks if he can't get near her then she's doing fine), or what? Also the note about bad breath has me a bit nervous, her breath is, well lets just say it's bad! I might be worring a bit much, but where she is outside all the time, eating god knows what... I can't help it. M
2031.3 | Try a pillowcase | MDA::NEWSTED | Tue Dec 06 1988 15:32 | 29
I worked for a veterinarian for many years and this was always our suggestion for "Vet shredders" For initial transportation, Put the cat in a Pillowcase. The cat can still breathe, but they can't see outside so they don't know whats going on. The pillowcase will provide some protection from claws too. Keep the cat in the pillowcase right up until the vet sees it. For inside the office, a strong hold by the scruff of the neck. One hand. Use a really tight grip, you cant be wimpy here. If you think it is hurting it's neck, consider your arm after a "shredding". With one hand gripping the scruff, claws can't reach you, nor can teeth, but that has to be a strong grip. I always used this - quite effective. I was the girl who held the cats during shots, shaving matts, IV injection, you name it. You have to step outside the "concerned loving pet owner" realm for a minute and act tough. At most Veterinary Hospitals there are trained assistants who will do this, but the pillowcase thing works for the traveling and the waiting room. I'm against tranquilizers period. Good Luck, nancy

I agree with Nancy about the tranquilizers. When I had to have Taffy tested for feline luke she had to be sedated because she hated the vets like your cat. It took hours for her to come back to her old self (cranky), she couldn't walk staight her tounge hung out and her eyes were rolled back. I felt like a heal. After that I decided to never make her go through that again and that I would take the scratched and biting from her. I remember after that visit there was always a star on her chart and it didn't mean she was good. Now we use a towel to cover her in the vet room. Cindy
2031.5 | Mine's a vet shreader too. | SOFBAS::CAISSIE | Donna | Tue Dec 13 1988 16:11 | 7 |
Brat is a vet shreader too. After our last adventure to the vet, the vet indicated he'd be real happy to not see Brat for a while. I know how you feel. It's real distressing to see your loved one hissing and spitting and growling at you. Just the same, Brat has to have his shots (next week). I'm just going to hand the carrier to the vet, tell him he'll need an assistant and body protection, and I'm gonna pace in the waiting room.

RE: .5 Who do you use for your vet services? I took Nippa to Dr.McGees in Marlboro and he knew exactly how to handle her. they ended up friends! M |
