2005.0. "Do Cats Think by Paul Corey" by TSE::POLIKOFF (North Central Massachusetts) Wed Nov 30 1988 10:07

The following may seem to be a joke but I am serious... well, except
for the BTW at the end of this note....

I saw an ad for a book called "Do Cats Think". Has anyone sent
for this book or do you know if it is available in the public library.
I KNOW that my cat thinks. My cat also speaks English. He likes
to go outside every morning so he comes to me and says meow but
with a definite sound of eouuut or ouuuut. I can make him say that
word anytime of day by saying to him, Do you want to go out"? and
if he wants to go out he will say ouuuut. If he does not want to
go out he will not meow or will make a very different meow.
As you cat owners know, cats have many meow sounds used for
different reasons. When they greet another cat as a friend the M
is missing but when they want to assert their authority they put
the M in. I read that the 3 sounds of meow, M, E and OW have different
meanings, The M is a stern warning, the E is affection and the OW
    is contentment.
My dog also understands Cat. She knows that phhhht with bared
claws means "I don't want you to play with me now and if you don't
get your nose out of my a__ you will be sorry. My dog who outweighs
the cat by a factor of 50 to 1 puts her tail and head down and slinks
away from this tiny fur ball. Its the funniest thing to see how
much control a little cat has on a large hunting dog.
I would like to hear from cat owners who are not from English
speaking households because I want to know if their cats communicate
in their language like ouuuut or eouuut for out like my cat does.

BTW: My dog knows that the top of a house is a rooooof. 8^)

2005.2How to talk to cats (book)BUFFER::LIWed Nov 30 1988 12:2413
I just read a book "How to talk to your Cat" (don't remember the
author). She also said that cats make different kinds of "meows"
to mean different things... didn't read anything about the "M",
"E" and "OW" part though. She had studied cats communicating with
kittens etc. and put together a vocabulary list-- two of them are:

mew/MEW = help, distress or HELP! DISTRESS!
MerROW = Stop (whatever you're doing)!

I've tried this second one on my cat, Tashti, without too much success.
"NO!" seems to work just as well, though he does give me a funny
    look when I say "MerROW"!

I have read Do Cats Think, and it is pretty interesting. (also
read How to Talk to Your Cat). I think there's a story in there
about a cat who brought a live bunny home on EASTER morning
and `gave' it to his people. There's a lot of little anecdotes
that (`supposedly') illustrate a cat's ability to think and
reason. I paid maybe 3.98 for the book, and it's definitely
    	worth it.
