1986.0. "LOST A DEAR DEAR FRIEND [now found]" by LAIDBK::GRANT (ether surfin') Sun Nov 20 1988 10:08

I hope some of you don't feel that this is cluttering the
notefile. Two nights ago my indoor cat, Garfield, got out.
Although he has been out before he has never been gone more than
two or three hours. He is a fairly timid cat and has been afraid
to go out in the street.

About a month ago we moved 12 miles across town from the house he
grew up in (for five years). At first he was a bit spooked by
the new house but the last couple of weeks he seemed to really
settle in.

I LOVE Garfield more than I have loved any animal in my life. He
is like a child to me. He helps me calm down after the rough
days at work and sleeps at the foot of the bed at night. I allow
this despite the fact that I was diagnosed as allergic to cats
two years ago.

I have read the previous notes regarding lost cats and hope that
maybe he is just locked in a garage somewhere waiting to be let
out. My wife and I have had a picture of him printed up and are
making posters to place all around the neighborhood. Since I am
not near a large DEC facility it is unlikely any of you will see
Garfield (I live in Riverside, CA). What I hope from you gentle
cat lovers is that you will send out your good thoughts/mental
vibrations/prayers/whatever to the great protector of animals
that my beloved friend will return.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Sorry to hear about the wanderer. But as you have apparently seen
from this conference, there is always hope. Have you tried some
    of the other techniques, like...

o Recording his absence with the vets in the area - many of
them keep a record of lost and found, even though it might not be
    	openly visible.
    	o Contacting the local newspaper.
o Contacting the humane society or equivalent.
o One I haven't seen mentioned - posting notices with the schools
in the area. Kids are the most likely to see him.

Also, leave food and a familiar article outside for him to home
    in on.

    Sorry I can't help more - I'm in NH.

Let us know how it is going please...thanks.

    Dear Bob,

Even though I'm way over here in N.H. rest assured that
my thoughts and strength will be with your Garfield. I will try
to push as much positive energy to him that I can. Keep trying
to do everything possible to locate him and spread the word and
I'll pray for a happy ending.

                                                   Take care,
                                                                kim

Have you gone back to your old house to see if he's there? (or
called the new owners to ask them?) Even though he's an indoor
cat, they have an amazing sense of direction, and it is possible
    	that he went back there.

1986.4Eureka! Garfield is back 55 hours later!LAIDBK::GRANTether surfin'Mon Nov 21 1988 08:3540
Hurray! I woke up this morning at 5:00. As I lay there
wondering why I was awake so early I thought I heard a
cat meow downstairs. I went to the back door but there
was nothing there so I thought "I must be imagining things!".
When I heard it again I went to the front door and called
and Garfield came sauntering around the corner.

After taking him upstairs to the bedroom and waking my
wife for a teary reunion I took him down stairs where
he polished off a half box of kitty treats (he usually
only gets two) and a full can of cat food (he usually
only gets half).

I tell you folks this experience must have taken ten
years off my wife's and my lives. We hadn't realized
quite how much a central part of our lives Garfield is.
People joke that the cat is one of their kids -- this
one really is!

We put up a number of large posters with a photograph
of Garfield and went to visit the humane society
yesterday. We were going to put an ad in the newspaper
today and make up handbills to distribute to all the
neighbors in a two mile radius.

We received a call last night where someone thought they
saw him run into an orange orchard about a mile and a half
from our house. I bundled up warm and trudged the orange
orchards in the dark for two hours calling his name.

It's too bad we can't ask him what happened. I thank
you all for your thoughts and prayers.

A VERY VERY VERY HAPPY,

	Bob (father of Garfield)

P.S. re: .-1 I also went back to the old house and left water
and food out. (It is vacant -- going through escrow). We were
going to phone some neighbors tomorrow.

HAPPY NEWS BOB! I just read your note now and in the
span of 1 minute, Garfield was lost and then found.
A happy note to my Monday morning.

Great news. Now explain to him about sneaking out! Sometimes these
    kids just don't understand.

Bob, just like .5 I to just read this message and already a happy
ending, I am thrilled. And we really don't joke about our animals
being kids just like you they are.

1986.8That's Wonderful!WORDS::STUDLEYMon Nov 21 1988 09:3813
This is wonderful! I'm so happy you got your Garfield back.

We lost our Hobo this past spring but didn't have such a happy ending.
Now all of our kitties have collars and ID tags. One is an
indoor/outdoor, the other 2 are indoor only and I hope to keep them
that way. But just in case they happen to sneak out, they will
have identification. You might think of getting and ID for Garfield
just in case he decides to roam again.

Again, I'm happy to hear everything worked out for you.

TERRIFIC! The initial note brought a tear to my eyes, but a
grin just shot across my face. Give Garfield a hug from Schnapps,
    Tequila and myself...

Maybe you should have a "Party in the West" (see Note 1967) to
    celebrate!

    Y E A !!!!! Great news.......YOU BET, cats are like our children!

I know how you feel....when Ebony got out (he's indoor ONLY), he
was gone for a VERRRRRRY long 10 hours. I was just devastated to
think I'd never see his beautiful face again, but when he just
"showed up" it was the happiest feeling and I just cried (of course
they show up saying "hey, what's for dinner, I'm starved").

Anyway, I'm glad your baby came back!!

Bob, I am so glad your fur-face came back. You're really lucky.
My sister had a cat in her garage for two weeks and didn't even
know it. Her husband had been working on a car in there, and the
cat must have snuck in. I went in their garage to put the trash
out, and it had been ripped apart. So I looked around and sure
enough -- a kitty hiding out!

I went over to the neighbor's house because they have 5 or 6 cats,
and asked if they were missing any cats. The mom and daughter started
crying because they were so happy the cat had been found. They
thought it was dead for sure after two weeks. As soon as the cat
saw the little girl, it came running out. I was very happy for
    them.

[This is late because the notesfile was unaccessable via the
net during the vacation but I thought it would close out
this note nicely!]

I have a lot to be thankful for today, Thanksgiving:
My health; a warm home; my family; good friends; a wonderful
place to work that values its employees; the EASYnet where
I have such a vast array of friends who I've never met;
but MOST OF ALL I'm thankful this year that my Garfield
is home safe and sound to enjoy this holiday with us.

Thank you so much for your notes and thoughts I hope each
of you finds reason to be thankful for your pets (oops sorry
"kids") and the happiness they bring to our lives.

I know Garfield is going to have a Thanksgiving feast like
none he's ever seen before.

Best wishes to you and yours,

	Bob Grant

P.S. from Garfield: Happy Thanksgiving to all my Furry
Friends out there in EASYnet land.
