| | I once had a kitten, with the poop problem, and he did not appreciate
beinging touch near his personal areas for cleaning. Once his diet
was changed (he didn't drink enough water, so we had to make sure
he got thirsty once in a while), and a brave feline groomer clipped
some fur back there - the problem was solved. Your current problem
with secretions sounds like a visit to the vet is needed.

| | Sounds like anal glands overactive or having problems. The vet is
    the right course of action.

| | One or two of my males will have an occasional drop or two in
that area - this happens when they are angry or excited.

I have not noticed any swelling or that the anal glands are
impacted or infected. That would be my indication that a
trip to the vet was in order. You might call and ask for
telephone advice and information - I thinkl that the clear
yellow liquid (boy, does it ever smell !!) comes from scent
glands (I don't know the exact term). If you vet has more
info, I'd appreciate hearing about it!

Becky lets loose with the anal glands when she's stressed out
(read: doesn't like what the vet is doing to her!) The anal glands
have small openings on either side of the anus (hence the name).
Do not pick, poke or pull, it makes for one angry cat. If the cat
has blocked anal glands, they may scoot around in a sitting
position. If this happens, call your vet. He/she will probably
have you bring the pet in and show you how to express the glands to
     relieve the pressure.

| | My vet once suggested to serve my cat OLIVES to increase his desire
for water. I thought the guy was nuts but tried it and to my surprise
my cat loved olives. First he played with them, but then finally
he ate them. This worked great, cheap too! He used to drag around
after his morning box trip but now when we notice a little discomfort
we pop him his olives and watch the water disappear. Only once
when I was grooming him did I have the same accident of which you
speak. The odor was enuf to send you running, I can't imagine it
in a car. I think I'd drive off the road!!

Snap....Dillan has the same problem...I wrote about it earlier but
I only described the "pellets" he leaves behind him. He also has
this secreation (sp?) and believe me it is baaaad!!

The vet said he has not got enough control over his bowel muscles
to keep that little pellet in so how can I expect him to control
the liquid stuff that comes out!

That's all very well for him to say but what about my clothes, my
    sofa, my carpet etc...

| 1948.9 | Mouzer called the vet. | MRMFG1::D_HARRIS |  | Thu Nov 10 1988 10:10 | 26 |

Back again.. with Mouzer "Poopie Butt". He's been okay for quite
a while, so we haven't brought him to the vet. However,.. I did
call the vet this morning...and I asked Him about this problem..with
Mouzer's behind. He said that its caused by the anal sacs. these
sacs get full of his "stool" and have to be cleaned out. when they
are full,..and when he gets excited or angry,...they may leak this
stinky liquid. What they call it...is they "express" them. He
said they could clean out his sacs, but some people just have them
removed on their animals. People that have pets with "not enough
control" on bowel muscles...ect... and a leaky behind..(sounds yucky
eh?) I know...the smells worse than you could imagine. So...
I know if it happens again..we are going to bring him in to see
ol' doc, if the cleaning out of the "sacs" doesn't work..then, its
    surgery for my Mouzer boy!

I didn't ask to see how much it costs...but I'm sure it will be
    worth the price.!!

We thought all of our cats were strange because they love green
olives so much! Nice to know that other cats eat them. Sugar our
oldest cat knocked the olive jar off the table one night while the
lid was off, she got her olive and was covered with the juice too,
she smelled but was happy! This is a nice notes file.
