| I'm afraid my technique is to NOT HAVE flowers in the house - silk flowers
are usually left alone, but not always. You are correct to be concerned
about nibbling houseplants - many can be toxic. Other solutions are to
hang plants where they cannot be reached by very agile cats....

Hi Will,
Maybe you should think of something else to give your
girlfriend, besides fresh flowers. I personally
prefer silk flowers, because they last longer. My
cats don't touch my silk flowers and plants.
But don't give her dried flowers. These are just as
bad, if not worse than fresh ones.
I suggest you buy her champagne, and jewels, and furs...
Of course, if her cat is a jewelry thief, like mine,
you could have a problem.
:-)

| Pet stores and sometimes supermarkets sell little containers that
will grow some type of grass like stuff, specifically for cats to
nibble on. I get my babies a little pot of catnip whenever I'm
at the garden place. They also "trim" my Boston Fern about every
day. Fortunately it grows as fast as they nibble. So, what I'm
saying is, give the puss safe stuff to nibble on, and keep the bad
stuff out of the house.

1915.8 | There is a list of toxic plants... SOMEWHERE! | MARVIN::JUBB | New mailstop at REO2-G/D2 | Wed Oct 26 1988 05:20 | 16 |
| Hi Will,
There are a couple of notes in this conference that list plants which
are toxic to cats. I'm afraid I can't remember where they are, but this
may jog the memory of someone who does.
If your only concern is that the plants may be harmful to the cat, then
making sure the only plants your cat can reach are harmless ones should
alleviate the problem. However, I suppose that depends on how much of
the plants your cat eats.... Our two nibble at the ends of the leaves,
and I don't mind, as the plants they nibble aren't toxic. However if they
started to eat hearty chunks I might have to reappraise the situation ;*)
Hope this helps.

| Of course, there are cats like mine....no matter what type of green thing
they eat, they immediately run into the bedroom, leap on the waterbed,
and "toss their cookies"...if you get my drift. I now have a totally
washable comforter for my bed - it's better than letting it live at the
cleaners...8^}

| There's a short list of household plants that are toxic in note
757. Can't remember if it lists flowers, but it's worth
a try!

You may also want to check note 266 and 320. These also list poisonous
plants. To check keywords for different notes, type in
SHOW KEYWORDS/FULL. This will give you a listing of keywords and
the notes that they are attached to.
Good Luck!

P.S. My little furbags like to play toss and fetch with my spider
plant babies.

| You know, my cat used to eat the plants only when he was mad. If he did
something bad like eat a whole box of donuts or something, and we spoke to him
about it, he would run to the nearest plant and start chewing it with a look
of defiance.
The spider plant never seemed to do anything to him, but the Christmas tree
sure gave a him a sore mouth! (Never mind that he was at the top of the
tree.)
However, we stopped this behavior because of the toxic plants that are out
there. You can buy stuff at the Pet store though.
