1897.0. "she wants an altered declawed cat" by VIDEO::TAYLOR (Me and my lil' pots o' purrs.) Wed Oct 19 1988 17:29

Ok fellow feliners, I need your help. A friend of mine is looking
for a cat. She wants a cat that has been already litterbox trained,
and has been altered and has been declawed ( I tried to talk her
out of that part, but I couldn't). She doesn't care what color
or whether it's a male or female. What is happening is that her
children (ages 14 and 10) want a cat, so she wants to surprise them
with one. The only problem is that her apartment doesn't allow
pets so she figures that if she keeps it a secret, and it is unable
to ruin anything with it's claws, then she can do it. Does anyone
    have any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Holly

1897.1The old Hide_The_Cat_Trick - too bad we have to live that wayTOPDOC::TRACHMANE.T.'s ZhivagoCats....DTN: 264-8298Wed Oct 19 1988 17:5415
Yes, teach her how to trim the nails - bring one of your cats to
her house or have her come to your house and show her how easy it
really is once you do it 5 or 6 times.

I would suggest a non-Siamese/Oriental type because they are vocal.
An exotic or persian could work because they are very laid back
and more quiet than some. Maybe check with some of the breeders
this weekend and see if any of them are trimming down their catteries.
They may have an adult that they need to place. You would have
to see if your friend can handle the grooming for a long hair.
If not, the exotic could work - maybe talk to Linda Dreigert
this weekend in Canada. She may have an exotic to two around.

I tried that approach. I volunteered to bring a cat over to her
house and teach her to clip the nails. You see, the other thing
she is afraid of is being scratched. I finally gave in to her,
but figured that I could find a cat that had already been declawed.

Shop around at shelters. They'll sometimes get adult cats that
have been declawed. Also pay attention to the classifieds.

    Holly,

When I was at Sterling Shelter a few weeks ago, there was a black
and white large declawed cat, female, I think. Very pretty and
    very friendly. Worth checking out.

You're right, there usually are some declawed kids at shelters.
You probably will run into one. Good Luck Holly !

How about Rebecca Bailys lovely Himmie? Maybe he hasn't found a
home yet. He was neutered as I remember and WAS declawd.

If you look back in the notes about two ago, she had two to give
    away.

Well, she saw Rebecca's note. We are going to Rebecca's house to
pick up the multicolored cat tonight.

    Thanks everyone for your help.
