    Yet another question about the new adoptees.....
    
    Ninja, the HUGE black male (2 years old) I just adopted has a strange
    habit.  He only drinks with his paw!  Instead of licking directly
    from the water bowl, he dunks his whole paw in until it is soaking
    wet, then he licks the water from his paw.  At first I thought he
    was just messing around with the bowl, etc.  But this is the only
    way he EVER drinks.  The bowl is plenty big enough, and I keep it
    full, so that's not the problem.  I also tried giving him milk.
     He does the same thing!  He looks like a bear catching fish from
    a river...
    
    Is this common?  He makes a real mess when he drinks.  The floor
    around his bowl is always drenched.  He DOES eat his food like a
    normal cat though.  His sister eats and drinks like a normal cat.
    
    What is going on?

    What is the size and shape of his water bowl? If he is a huge cat, and
    the bowl is small, it could be that it brushes against his whiskers
    and he doesn't like that feeling.

    The late lamented Pansy used to do that too.  Now Emma goes her
    one better.  She sits with both front paws in the dish!  Then one
    at a time, takes them out and 'drinks'.  She has double paws, so
    she isn't going to suffer from dehydration any time soon.

    You might want to try the old water bottle trick (see note 1747).
     My two drink out of a water bottle and voila "no more water all
    over the place".
    
    It might take a little time and training to get your guys used to
    drinking out of the bottle but it's worth it.  Try putting a little
    bit of tuna at the end of the spigot.  This will tempt them enough
    to get them licking (and hopefully realizing that water does come
    out!)

What water bottle?  This would solve a lot of problems
for me also.  Is this something on a stand or what. 
We also want to leave for a few days and this would
be great.

    I think I explained it in note 1747 but anyway, it's the type of
    water bottle that you use in rabit hutches. You can buy one at any
    grain or pet store.  The bottle I have holds 32 oz. and it hangs
    by a bracket (included with the bottle).  You may have to improvise
    as far as attaching the bracket to the wall (sinse their original
    design is to hang in a wire cage) but it can be done.
    
    It really is great and I think the cats actually drink more water
    by using this.  It's kind of like a wet toy for them.  It makes
    this klinking noise when they use it and I think that amuses them.
