| You most certainly *should* take him to the vets or the wound will
become infected. I would get him there as fast I as can, as it
sounds like he needs medical attention from a professional.

| There are poisonous snakes in New Hampshire, most notably
Cottonmouth ("Water Mocassin") and, much rarer, timber rattlers.
If attacked by the rattler, I don't think you cat would be lying
on the bed now. (I know that sounds crude, but it's actually a
positive message.)
Poisonous snake bites are usually easily identifiable by the
pattern made by the 2 hollow fangs....
. .
...although snakes often loose one fang but quick regenerate
a replacement.
Do you live near a swamp or lake??
My *guess* is your cat got in a cat-fight. But don't take my word
for it, get a vet's opinion...

| My vote is to take him to the vet right away. It sounds very
infected and needs a doctor's care to relieve the pain and to
make sure it heals properly. It must be awful to see him like
that ... so why wait????????

| That type of injury happened to my cat a few years ago, and I took
her to the vet immediately. He said he thought she had tangled
with a gopher. By all means get Ashed to the vet.

Definately get Ashes to the vet!! What if the animal that bit
him/her (didn't catch the sex) was rabid!! What if it becomes
infected?? What if a nerve was damaged!!

| OK, speaking with real experience here...Sounds like Ashes was in
a cat fight. This wound is abscessed and needs to be irrigated
and a drain needs to be inserted. This requires minor surgery.
The wound site is shaved, necrotic tissue is removed and a drain
will be inserted in one opening and back thru another opening, usuallly
surgically incised.
Abcesses are most common in cats. but by all means, Ashes needs
attention NOW! He will need antibiotics for about 10-14 days too!
So Stephanie, call mom, now, and get Ashes to the Dr.
Since this is a surgical procedure, Ashes will need to be sleeping
and should have NO food in his tummy till 12 hours after surgery.
He should go home the day after too, just to be sure there were
no other complications. I hope Ashes is up to date on all his shots
including rabies!!!
Please let me know how you make out!!!
BTW: since Ashes goes out, you may want to protect him againsst
leukemia too...

| Another vote for the VET!!!!!. Once where I use to live the cat
from across the street attacked my Autumn (this was a male that
attacked a female). I noticed a little blood when I got her out
of the tree but thought she'd be o.k., wrong! When I took her to
the vet he had to drain the sores and she had to take antibiotics
(sp). Do not wait get Ashes to the vet right away.

| Please do take Ashes to see the vet. What can happen in the case
of an abcess is that the wound can heal over on the outside so it
looks as though everything is okay. Actually there is often some
infection remaining "inside" and this can travel through the system
and reappear as an abcess in the same or another location. Ashes
will need to have antibiotics to completely get rid of the infection.
An untreated abcess can make an animal very ill.

| Hi, sorry it took so long to respond. Ashes is doing much better
now, although he "pretends" to still be sick just so he can get
spoiled like we have been doing for the past two weeks. The vet
said that it didn't have to be drained since Ashes did it on his
own (that is what I found on my comforter - and it was drenched).
Ashes asked me to thank you all for the care and support you have
given him.
