1850.1 | Science Diet's Feline Growth | TOKLAS::FELDMAN | PDS, our next success | Mon Oct 10 1988 18:15 | 13 |
| I think the only common moist kitten food is Feline Growth, which
is part of the Science Diet line made by Hills. The canned version
is a little harder to find than the dry, but you should be able
to find it if you shop around.
Science Diet's canned foods are drier than most. I taught Firecloud
to eat it by mixing in some KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement), gradually
reducing the proportion of liquid. He now eats it straight.
It's possible that some of the lesser known brands also make a kitten
version.

My kittens love the Feline Growth canned food. I just mix
it with a little warm water. The pet shop on Main St. in Hudson
carries it, as does the one in the Stow shopping plaza.

1850.3 | KMR--where?? | SHARE::SUPINO | | Tue Oct 11 1988 11:17 | 5 |
| Where can one find KMR? (kitten milk replacement) I now have two
new kittens in addition to my cat to the household, so I'd be
interested in purchasing some of this. Also, has anyone had problems
feeding IAMS kitten food to their little lovelies?

| I know that Ericson's feed shop in Acton has KMR.
As for IAMS kitten food -- my Elmo wouldn't touch it. But since
he is growing by the day on the regular IAMS, I'm not to worried.
Elmo was also about 5 months old when I got him.

| Oops! Should have mentioned, I live in the Chelmsford area and
work in Hudson MA, so if anyone knows of a place where they sell
KMR in those areas, I'd be most obliged!

| yes, Panther and Eirene had trouble with it. They also have trouble
with adult Iams. These also have problems with dyes, and have sensitive
stomachs in general. I don't know if their being part Siamese has
anything to do with it.

| There is a pet supply shop in the little plaza located across the
street from Marshall's in Chelmsford. I was told they carry KMR.
You may want to call first to be sure. Other places to check are
Agway in S. Chelmsford and UCF in Littleton. If you can't get any
in one of those places, let me know and I'll locate a source..

I was just wondering why you are feeding KMR - how old are the
kittens?

| Linda,
Funny you should mention Chelmsford Pet Care Center; we were just
there on Saturday. I've also been to Agway. I'll check into it.
Thanks!

Ya, why do you think you need to feed KMR? I was feeding it to
my little foster kitten because Meg wasn't nursing him enough, but
the vet told me that as soon as the little mite was eating kitten
food to get him off the KMR. She said that KMR should be used for
babies who aren't getting mother's milk, or for sickly kittens who
need a nutritional boost. The baby is off KMR, nearly off Meg,
and eats like a pig!

1850.11 | KMR only for un-weaned kittens, please | BENTLY::WILDE | Time and Tide wait for Norman | Mon Oct 17 1988 16:40 | 12 |
| If the kitten has been weaned to solid food, then KMR is not a good idea.
Solid food is the recommended diet for a weaned kitten, it packs more
nutritional wallop and helps them grow better...feeding KMR only removes
the appetite for what they should be eating. Quality dry
and/or canned food (brands are mentioned often in these notes)
and available fresh water will assure a healthy cat.
KMR is strictly a replacement or supplement to mother's milk when the kittens
are young enough to need mother's milk. HONEST...cats don't need milk once
they are weaned...it's a little like our passion for fried food - some of us
like it, but we KNOW it isn't good for us...and I've had cats that simply
don't want milk once they are weaned.
