1837.0. "Should I get another??" by AIMHI::LLEBLANC () Fri Oct 07 1988 10:50

My 13 year old golden retriever just passed away and the house seems
    like a tomb...

I already have a cat (rather large male) but I'm thinking of getting
another one and I need some advise.

Alex is an outside/inside (mostly outside when it's nice) and "king"
    of the roost...here's my thoughts

    	- I'm wondering if he would be rather put out if I
          did get another kitty,

    	- Should I get a male or a female (I find males more affectionate)
and would Alex adapt more to a female or does it matter.

    	- Should I get a kitten (would he hurt it or show
it the ropes) or should I get an older cat. (I did have a cat
stay with us for a few days that didn't have any claws and Alex
          didn't fight with it)

        - OR...am I just being paranoid and just get another kitty without
          all of these questions???

Any advise would be great! Thanks!!

    You're just being paranoid.

If you read through the recent notes (over the past three weeks
or so), you'll see that quite a few of us have recently introduced
kittens into households with other cats.

Don't feel limited to adding a kitten, I've been doing just fine adding
full grown cats to my household. They have all been neutered and I think
that really cuts down on conflicts, but I've added both males and females
without any incidents. Find a cat or kitten that you like and that needs
a home (just read this Notesfile for possibilities), and go to it!

I must confess I have one cat that has not adjusted and it has been over
a year so I don't think he ever will; this has escalated to out-and-out
bloodshed forcing us to keep him physically separated from the rest.
Fortunately he gets along very well with the dogs, he just hates other
cats. And he is super affectionate with us, sleeps curled up on my pillow!

    Hi....
I have an adult female cat who was abandoned that needs a loving
home. She is used to being outside. Her story is in basenote
1712. She is still outside and it is getting COLD! Maybe she could
    fill the gap.

Also, check out note 1815. I don't think she was able to place
her female yet, (she sits down the hall from me).

I know she is leaving this weekend, so maybe you can contact her
    if you are interested.

I have successfully introduced kittens into my house without major
problems. Adult neutered cats actually are documented on taking
to kittens and 'mothering' them. I have a 6 1/2 yr old, 15 lbs.
male cat that let a kitten sleep all over him and he even cleaned
it on occasion. If yours is neutered you may have better luck.

Not only did they adapt well in the house, but Scuff goes outside
on a harness and the kitten wanted to follow. I had to get another
harness and let her outside. They do fairly well, sometimes getting
the lead crossed, but for the most part Scuff owns the yard and
'protects' Sneezy when she joins him in backyard frolic and patrol.

I have three kittens to offer if you are interested....call me
I am located in Nashua/Merrimack area.
