1821.0. "Littermates bond better?" by AIMHI::UPTON () Tue Oct 04 1988 10:01

    	Question:

Is it better to get two kittens from the same litter or
    	kittens from two different litters?

The info I am looking for is - do they bond better to each
other if they are from the same litter or does it make any
    	difference at all?

    	Second Question:

Do we get two females or a male and female. Both of course
will be taken to the Vet when they are old enough to be neutered.

If these questions have been answered somewhere in this file,
please excuse me and direct me to the note.

    	Again thanks in advance

These are both questions that everyone has their own 2 cents worth
    about.
I have my cat max of 3 right now. Portia and Oscar were litter
mates and get along beautifully. They're about 16 months old now.
Portia was a female and Oscar was a male, but are both now "its".
We introduced Elmo (now 6 months) about a month ago. Elmo is still
a male, though only until this coming Friday. Elmo gets along with
everybody, but nobody gets along with Elmo. Hopefully his operation
on Friday will calm him down, and calm our household down. However,
I think our Elmo problems have to do with the fact that Elmo is
a HOLY TERROR, an OFFSPRING OF THE DEVIL, and SPASTIC all rolled
into one. I also hope that my vet is right and that the neutering
will calm him down. I don't think our problems have anything to
do with the fact that Elmo was not a littermate (though if Portia
and Oscar were still horrible kittens causing trouble all the time,
it might help) nor do I think it's a problem that Elmo of the boy
gender as opposed to the female gender.

I think if you are going to get 2, don't worry so much about the
sex. Just, get the 2 at the same time (whether littermates or not)
so that both kittens will have equal chance to hold the same postion
    in the pecking order.

    Good luck.

I have had cats that are littermates and those that came from separate
litters. For the most part, it seems that my cats who were
littermates were closer pals. They tend to sleep together and groom
each other more than those who are not littermates. For those that
were not of the same litter, it seemed that one liked the other
more than the second liked the first; their affection for each other
    never seemed as reciprocal.

My 15 cents worth..... a cat is a cat is a cat is a cat. Related
or not - after a time even you won't know if they are or not. They
really don't care - I think that all they care about is that they
have a buddy or two around to get into trouble with or play with.

1821.4one opinion - it doesn't mater either waySKITZD::WILDETime and Tide wait for NormanTue Oct 04 1988 13:237
My littermates are not all that close - they are okay with each other, but
they do not play together much - Nicky and Hannah, and Tabby and Hannah,
and Sam and Hannah, are the play combinations in this house - please note,
Hannah is the key - and she isn't anyone's litter mate...pick 2 bright
and playful kittens, toss in some toys, and stand back. Litter mates
or not does not seem to matter as much as personality.

I guess that you probably didn't mean it to sound like it did, but
please take them to the Vets before they're due to be spayed.

They should go for shots and a checkup around 12 weeks.

    	Re: .5

Thanks for mentioning it, but I would naturally take them to
the Vet the first week we get them for a check-up and all
necessary shots, and then later when it' TIME for them to
    	be spayed.

I guess you all agree that it really doesn't matter whether
they are littermates or not, just as long as they have each
other to play with, plenty of toys and of course human
    	companionship too.

    	Thanks!

re:6 YUP! That frees you to select any old kitty that suits
YOUR fancy - maybe 2, or 3, or 4 !! The more the
                 crazier you will become!
