This weekend has been a tough one. I have heard so many animal abuse stories, it made me sick. I came very close to adopting two new kittens this weekend. The first one was Saturday morning. I was working at the Bolton fair when I looked at the Fair Committee booth and saw a box with a sign that said "Free Kittens". Well, of course I just had to go over and take a peek. When I went over and picked up one of the kittens, someone said that they had found the kittens in the box out in the field. They couldn't have been more than a couple of weeks old, they were flea infested, and they all had worm bellies. I felt SO sorry for them. There were five of them. One black and white, one pure gray, and 3 gray and white. I told the woman that if they weren't adopted by the end of the day, I would take whatever was left. I figured that if I couldn't keep all of them, then I could at least find a good home for them. Well, all of them found homes. The second story I heard Sunday. I was at the Framingham cat show. They had some Animal shelters there with cats and kittens for adoption. There was this one calico kitten there that I absolutely fell in love with. She was only five weeks old and could fit in the palm of my hand. Someone had dropped her off at the shelter when she was only a week old. They had to feed it with an eyedropper. They didn't think it was going to live. Well, it was doing MUCH better and was ready for a home. I kept going back to see if it had found a home yet. I decided that if she didn't have a home by the end of the day, I would take her. She was BEAUTIFUL! But, at around 3:30, she found a home. The last story was the worst. It was about a full grown cat at the Framingham humane society. I CRINGED when I heard it. Someone had found this cat in a bag tied tied to a branch of a tree. They figured that some boys were going to use the bag for batting practice because there was a bat close by. The woman found the cat and brought it to the Humane Society. How can people be so cruel??? This made me SO angry I was ready to scream! How can people abuse such a poor helpless creature like that? Don't they have any heart at all? I just had to get this off my chest. Thanks. Holly

Hi Holly!! I AGREE 400%!!! Everytime I look at Sasha I think, "how can someone abandon or abuse a cute, tiny little thing as a kitten?" And Brandi too. Cats (and dogs) want nothing but love and someone to take care of them. And they give that love back 10-fold!! I hate hearing about animals being beaten or left somewhere in a box or whatever....brings tears to my eyes when I hear about them. JJ

Holly, I saw that kitten and the other cats up for adoption at the Framingham show yesterday. It tears at my heart to hear of the abuse stories, and after the Ragdoll - THAT'S IT! I don't think I could buy another cat without having a guilty conscience, although there were so many beautiful breeds of cats at the show, yours included. I am so glad the kitten found a home. In fact, when I left around 2:00, more than half of the cats brought there by Hopkington Humane had been adopted. /Roberta

Holly, you are SOOOOO RIGHT. How can people be SO CRUEL.........!!!! To just leave kittens in a box not knowing whether they will be found or starve to death....AARRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHH !!!!!!!! And to use a cat tied in a bag for batting practice. How would those BEINGS like trading places with the cat?? I'm SO GLAD to hear that the little `callie' found a home. On second thought, I'm glad I missed the Framingham show -- I don't think I could have taken it! (Saw the Boston INCATS show though...) Maureen |
