1739.0. "Kitten Nutrition" by WITNES::MACONE (Has anyone seen my Pocket Protector?) Tue Sep 06 1988 14:32
As I have previously mentioned, we got Elmo this weekend. Elmo
is about 4 months old and a holy terror. Since I have never had
a kitten before, I have some questions about kitten nutrition.
What food should I be feeding? Right now, he eats Portia and Oscar's
food -- IAMS dry with 2 cans. I was only doing 1 cae per day before,
but with the added mouth to feed, I switched to 2 cans.
Elmo doesn't seem to be eating that much. I'm doing a pretty good
job of making sure that the big cats leave enough canned food for
Elmo, but Idoubt that Elmo is even eating 1/2 can per day.
Also, Elmo is a sucker. He likes to snugle up on our bedroom quilt
and suck on the lace. I have found that when he is sucking, if
I pick him up and bring him to the food dish, he will eat. So,
I assume that Elmo was weaned to early, and thus tries to suck when
he is hungry. Does this sound reasonable?
Is it normal for Elmo to only eat when me or Larry is watching?
When I bring him to the food dish, he eats as long as I am standing
there. As soon as I walk away, he will follow me. This happens
even when Portia and Oscar are outside. Besides, Elmo seems to
have adjusted quite well to PortyPoo and OscoBosco.
Lastly, if I should switch to a special kitten food, how do I keep
PortyFatCat and Oscar out of the food? or, is it unnecessary?

| I think the IAMS dry kitten food is very good. Don't worry
too much about a kitten eating, as they have a lot to get
acquainted with in a new environment and such. As for the
sucking, my siamese cat is 8 years old----and still
sucks my blankets every time he gets a chance!!!
