I have exactly the same *problem* with my Sammie. Except for the
fact that Dave doesn't feed them very often (the smell of cat food
makes him sick) he gives him the same amount of love as I do.
The only thing I can think of is the male voice being a lot deaper
than that of a woman and he gets frightened very easily by loud voices.
Other than that I don't know what it is.

| Not unusual at all. Most animals pick their "person", and it's
usually the one that doesn't want them on em. My boyfriends Canine
did that. He's had the dog for 8 years and I've only been in the
picture about 2 1/2 and he shows a marked preference for me
(translation, sleeps on my head, follows me EVERYWHERE.)

| You might want to suggest to your husband that he basically ignore
the cat for about a week. See what the results are. Sometimes cats
and people too don't feel the need to give out when the other person
is giving lots to them. It always has to be a mutual give and take.

| Or, YOU ignore the cat and have your husband lavish attention on
the baby. Have him be the only one that offers treats, etc.
You pick up the cat and then immediately pass the cat to your
husband and have him walk away holding the cat, then have him
sit down with the cat on his lap & cuddle & play with the cat
with you not around or within eyesight of the cat. ?? might work.

1669.5 | Worth a Try! | SALEM::DEFRANCO | | Wed Aug 17 1988 14:04 | 6 |
| re: .4 I think I'll give this a try. It's going to kill me to
ignore Sam (he has such pleading eyes and sorrowful meows to make
me feel guilty). Sure hope he understands why I'm doing this!
Thanks, Jeanne, Sam and Cali

| Jeanne, it will be hard, but if your husband makes it fun enough,
he will enjoy himself inspite of himself! If that doesn't work,
maybe have him pick out another kitten and have him only handle
the new kitten! Two or three are always better then one or two!
Good Luck and don't worry or feel guilty!!

| It might be that your cat is attracted to your perfume or scented
cosmetics, bath soap, etc., so you might try omitting perfumed stuff
for awhile too. Another vote for a second cat as well.

1669.8 | Purrrfume? Maybe? | SALEM::DEFRANCO | | Wed Aug 17 1988 15:38 | 17 |
| Another good idea. Maybe John and I can switch after shave and
purfume (just kidding!!). I also wanted to add that we do have
another cat, Cali. Actually she was our first kitty and although
she is NOT a lap cat she does give us both equal attention. She
has been a very good influence on Sam as she has taught him many
things but I guess the "love mummy and daddy equally" lesson just
didn't sink in.
Maybe a third kitty might be the answer (if I can learn the "hands
off lesson"
Another thought, Sam was raised by women for the first 10 weeks
of his life. Could this have predisposed him to preferring women
to men?

1669.9 | Natural Preferences? | SALEM::NOYCE | | Wed Aug 17 1988 16:22 | 11 |
| It has always been my observation that the kittens seemed to prefer
the female human to the male human. We got a cat (lucky) for my
youngest son but the cat chose my wife as his pet human. He
allows my son to do anything (and I do mean anything) he wants
to him but he always leaves when he can and finds my wife to
be with her. The dog we got for my oldest son 10 years ago
obeys only me although he will accept loving from everyone. I
always felt that cats prefered women and dogs seemed to prefer
the men. I realize this isn't true in all cases but more than
you might think.

Hmm, the other Sharon in this file has a SO named Dave also...hmmm...
Don't mean to sound callous, but consider yourself lucky. Mielikki
(sometimes called Mieligrouch) hates Dave, she hisses at him, swats at
him, growls at him, runs from him. All he has done was fed her, loved
her, and told her she's beautiful. I used to think it was a
male/female thing, but she hates women too, except me. She's a one
person cat and it may turn out to be the deal with your kitten.
Don't feel guilty, feel honored. :-)
