| Luther or someone else probably clobbered the carpets and no one
noticed it. Now the heat is making it noticeable. Quite recently
someone entered a note about a product that's supposed to remove
odors like this even from carpets.

1640.2 | Me too... | EDUC8::TRACHMAN | | Wed Aug 10 1988 13:23 | 25 |
| Nancy, I am having the same problem. I have been searching high
and low for the source of an odor and can't seem to locate it.
My guess is the humidity - I picked up some of that carpet
sprinkle stuff Arm & Hammer - it covers the odor for a day or
two - my next try will be to shampoo - I also put a fan down
stairs to help dry things out - also I have been closing the
lower level windows during the hot day and opening them at
night if if cools off and is dry out. These things have
been helping - I think that when we get into Sept/Oct. the
problem will pass and so will some of the heat and humidity.
I, too, am VERY sensitive to odors and I have 15 cats - most
folk that come into my house can't believe that I have that
many - now, with this new smell that I can smell, they will
believe it! I am scooping 2 or 3 times a day, vacuuming
almost every day, changing the swimming pool 2 or 3 days
sooner than usual to try and curb the possibility of odor.
sigh.... Last night I was crawling around on the floor
just to see if I had missed a spot or if someone had
sprayed and I didn't notice it.
Hang in there - we will be complaining of the cold/snow/wind/sleet
soon enough I guess.

| Not cat odors, but...
Has anyone smelled the inside of their lateral files lately? They
turn the AC off (apparently) in the office spaces in MRO3 on ther
weekends. Most of our files smell as though something died in there.
It is the paper, of course, acting like what it is - organic matter.

1640.4 | back up a few notes.. | DRFIX::IVES | | Wed Aug 10 1988 13:54 | 6 |
| Please look at note #1627.
It sounds like a great product. Sometimes shampooing just makes
it worse. (Smell that is.)

| I agree that the product in 1627 sounds great, but I can't seem
to locate (nor can my roommate) the actual source of the smell.
If the smell is simply due to cat hairs and skin from the cat will
shampooing remove the odor?

1640.6 | Where is it coming from???????? | EDUC8::TRACHMAN | | Wed Aug 10 1988 15:25 | 5 |
| I agree also - but I can't locate the souce either. Tonight I will
try again. But I am tired of sniffing rugs, closets, cat beds,
and am sure I look pretty silly - last night I had 2 kids jump
on my back while I was on all fours sniffing the rug. They
thought it was a new game.

| When I can't locate the source, it seems to be for one of two reasons:
(1) there is a definite source but its camoflagued (sp?) -- some
place has been clobbered and dried so its invisible, or (2) Holly-the-cat
been in the vicinity with the long hair on her bottom
slightly damp and left a residual smell. The latter happens a lot
to things like my bathrobe and anything else she likes to nap on;
a trip thru the washer fixes #2.

1640.8 | sigh.... | EDUC8::TRACHMAN | | Wed Aug 10 1988 17:46 | 4 |
| Yeah, it must be that Karen. Maybe if I keep vacuuming and changing
the bag and pray for dry weather it will help. I have or will have
washed everything in the house by tonight or the weekend! grrr
I am praying for cool dry weather!!

1640.9 | steam/shampoo the rugs - add odor killer to shampoo | DOOBER::WILDE | Time and Tide wait for Norman | Thu Aug 11 1988 14:21 | 5 |
| Four cats and 2 dogs in our house - we steam/shampoo the rug 3 times a year.
I've found that adding a little nilodor or other pet odor killer to the
rug shampoo mixture works very well with the odors. I think a dirty
rug gets to smell like a dirty animal real fast - even if noone has made
a mistake there.
