1638.0. "GOOD NEWS!" by FDCV13::JOHNSON () Tue Aug 09 1988 13:14

Ginger's coming home today! Dr. Nord says eyes still meaty and
chest still congested ..... but eating them out of house and home.
We're to connect the vaporizer or humidifier. Which would be the
best? Don't know what the difference is.

Whiskie has a bare spot between her rear legs also but I have a
feeling that maybe she got pecked by a black bird. She brought
home one last week with a 2' wing span. I just pray that's what
it is and not the desease that some of you others have been talking
about. Keep your fingers crossed for her, please. She gave me
    a beautiful present 2 months ago also. A 3 1/2' snake.

I'm happy to hear about Ginger.

If I recall correctly, a vaporizer has some type of heating element
in ti that makes the vapor come out as hot steam. And a humidifier
uses some other method to make the steam which is a cool steam.
I always remember using the vaporizer when I was sick, yet we use
our humdiifier 24 hours a day in winter so that the air won't be
    as dry.

If you already own one or the other, that's the one I'd use, but
if you have to go out and buy one, I'd probably buy the Humidifier
since you could use it more often. Also, since it's so hot and
humid out no anyway, I wouldn't want to add any more hot steam to
    my house.

    Good luck with Ginger.

Thanks! We bought a humidifier last night. She must feel a little
better since she leaped from the waterbed last night and hit the
screen door on her bedroom when she saw Whiskie. Her back was up
and boy did Whisk jump and run.

What I now need help on is advice on giving meds. Dr. Nord said
that Ginger has 2 kinds of worms (that med I put in her moist food).
It's the eye sauve. She won't hold still for that. My hubby held
her rear paws in one hand and front paws in the other but she still
got loose, clawed him and her eyes look no better. HOW DO YOU HOLD
    A WILD CAT??????????????/ God ............. the strength she's
    getting.

place her flat on her back on your lap with her head toward your
knees - have someone hold her 4 paws with one hand and have them
use their other hand to hold her body. You take your left hand
and put it up and around her head and with index finger and thumb
raise the eye lid with right hand squeeze gooey stuff along the
rim of the lower lid - then release lids from left index finger
and thumb and sort of very gently rub lids together to make sure
the gooey stuff spreads around. reverse directions if you are
either right or left handed. If you do not have a 2nd person
wrap tightly in a bath towel and then lay cat on your lap with
head toward your knees - use your left elbow to hold cat's body
then lay your arm up the tummy with wrist on chest, cup hand around
the cat's head and then position left index finger and thumb to raise eye
    lid.
When procedure is complete, release towel, release cat, and run
like hell cause the cat is probably very mad! Just kidding!
Kitty will love you because you released her, but she will
figure out that she feels better and may not mind at all.
It's when she does feel better, she will think that she
doesn't really need this gooey stuff any more even though
she does! After you do it a few times you will get better
at it. Wear long sleves, just in case.

    Good Luck,

    E.T.

1638.5another way to tryIAMOK::GERRYHome is where the Cat isWed Aug 10 1988 12:3810
I've always had better luck by standing the cat on it's four feet,
and holding one hand firmly around the face, gently lift the head
back slightly and with the other hand squeeze some of the stuff
    in the eyes.

Of course, I've got persians and their used of me messing with their
eyes, so they might be a little more easier to handle.

I use a laundry sack with a drawstring. Put the cat in the sack, let
the headpop out and draw the string. You now have a cat head only
to deal with. This works well as I don't have anyone to help me
    give meds.
