1618.0. "Cat Repellent/Furniture Scratching" by TUDOR::ERYN () Thu Aug 04 1988 10:50

Is there a "best" brand of cat repellant? We are getting new
furniture, and since my siamese especially has destroyed the
old couch, I know they are interested in scratching
furniture. I am planning to cover the furniture when we are
not there and spray it with a cat repellent, to put their
scratching post in a very obvious place, and spray it with
catnip spray (providing I can find something like that). I
was wondering if any particular brand of cat repellent works
best or is easier to use than any other, and welcome any
reactions to whether my plan will work or not. My husband
and I are not home during the day so just trying to train
without taking other measures does not work (it results
    in destroyed couch).

IF your cat has a habit of taking on one particular spot of the furniture
to scratch....and that is a big IF...you can get one of the new sisel covered
cat scratch posts and place it in front of the likely location, thereby
getting the cat to use the post and not the furniture. However, that is
only if your cat scratches in the same place every time. I'm allergic to
most repellents so I have no input on the "best" brand....frankly, the
ones that I've smelled are ugly enough to keep ANYONE away.

Did any of you catch the cartoon on the front of Daphne Negus's
Cat World in the last edition of Cats Magazine?

A woman is talking to her friend while sitting in the living room.
She is saying, "oh, my cats never scratch the furniture - they use
their cat tree" or something like that.

The punch line is that the furniture is metal lawn chairs and wooden
    crates standing on end...

the cat tree is a full size, fully padded SOFA standing on end in
the corner of the room. 8^o!! Oh no!!

I hope it doesn't come to this with you!

PS- if you haven't purchased your sofa yet, we bought a new sofa
last year and the little beasties haven't touched it yet. It is
made out of florapolished cotton. Either they aren't into Laura
Ashley type patterns, or the polished cotton is no fun to shred.

1618.3I tried for the crates but was overruled...TUDOR::ERYNFri Aug 05 1988 09:5219

I would love to see the cartoon! I really wanted to get furntiure from a
company called "This End Up", but my husband thought it looked like packing
crates and wouldnt hear of it. I was attracted to it because only the cushions
are fabric, everything else is wood. We did find some nice looking all wood
furniture - at twice the price of the "This End Up" stuff!

The sofa that is shredded is a polished cotton; the new one is a more textured
fake fabric (olefin or some other brand of polyester). It does have some wood
on the front of the arms which is their favorite place to scratch, though they
will also scratch the side of it as well, now that they have pulled out the
carboard padding that was in the front of the arms...

I'll try covering it for a while and encouraging the scratching post, and
maybe some day I'll be able to take the covers off (probably by the time the
child is old enough to get it very messy!).
