1585.0. "Sammie is sick!!" by SHAPES::TAYLORS (Sharon) Tue Jul 26 1988 12:51

    On Sunday when I got up, Dillan could not stop sneezing (really
    loud, powerful sneezes too!) but on Monday he was OK. This morning
    when I got up Sammie was sneezing all over the place and his left
    eye was full of gunk!!

    I just got back from seeing the vet and he says that Sammie has
    conjunctivitis (sp?) and a nose and throat infection for which he
    has given him an injection and a bucket full (well quite a few)
    tablets - to clear up the conjunctivitis (sp?) but he can't give
    anything for the nose and throat virus - said it should clear up
    by itself. He has also got a temperature of 103 3/4.

    I was very worried incase it was cat flu (Sammie has never been
    vaccinated but Dillan has but I don't think he would survive anything
    like that after having Key Gaskell syndrome).

    The vet said that Dillan had no signs of gunk so he should be OK
    but I could always go back and get some more tablets.

    Has anyone else's cat had this. Does anyone know how long it will
    take to clear up - the vet said give it a couple of days!

1585.1Conjuntivitus-the itchy virus!AIMHI::BOYKOTue Jul 26 1988 13:3613
    Last November, my siamese had a litter of four kittens. Within
    eitht days, they were suppose to open their eyes. The eyes stayed
    puffy and swollen with liquid. I contacted the vet, getting them
    on a cortisone cream that soon cleared the eye conjuntivitus.
    I swabbed their eyes with warm water and boric acid solution.
    But continue using the cream until it is all gone is very
    important, because if you stop too soon, the virus will come
    back again very quickly. Usually within a week, the eyes are
    clear again. Be sure to wash your hands with hot water, as
    it can be spread again quite easily.

    Good luck!

1585.2Don't worry..MEMV01::BULLOCKFlamenco--NOT flamingo!!Tue Jul 26 1988 14:0711
    My Billie had conjunctivitis a while back. The vet gave me some
    glup to put in her eyes, and it took about a week to get them
    looking normal again.

    Don't worry--just follow the vet's advice, and even tho your cat
    may look like it's in pain, it's simply reacting to the virus and
    the cure.

    Good luck,

    Jane

    	Well, I'm assuming that people conjuntivitis is the same
    	thing (approximately) as kitty conjuntivitis and I can
    	tell you that it really doesn't hurt. It itches, and
    	there may be a slight burning sensation it you don't catch
    	it early. And, you can't wear you contacts and should
    	throw out all eye makeup. I never threw out my makeup....

    	It is extremely contagious. I went on a two day bus ride
    	and by the end of the trip everyone had conjunctivitis,
    	except me (I had just gotten over it and was still on
    	medication - lucky me).

    	So chances are, one kitty gets it, so will the others. I
    	hope people can't catch it from the cats!!!

    Hope Sammie gets better soon!

    Best wishes,

    Karen

    PS Tell him he's not the only one having tablets forced down him
    - Georgie is too! (due to a nasty gash in his paw)

    Thanks everyone

    ps. Karen, I'll tell Sammie about Georgie but I don't think it will
        stop him sneezing. He sneezed so hard last night he made himself
        jump. Hope Gerogie's paw heals soon.
