| I thought cats liked their own boxes. I know whenever I have my
friends cat for a weekend, my cat always lays in his box and won't
let the other one use it...

| Michele,
How old is this cat? My eighteen year old Siamese started this
when she developed Kidney problems. Sometimes a bladder infection
in cats will induce voiding in this manner. Please check with
your vet, he will be able to tell you if your cat is suffering
from these symptoms.

| I send a checkup at the vet. There are lots of reasons for going
outside the litter box, but it is also one of the classic signs
of a urinary tract infection. If neglected, these can be very serious
(if total blockage occurs, a rupture can lead to death).

I agree with Karen. My late cat, Patches, did this and she
did indeed have a problem (blood in the urine) If they do
it right in front of you when they KNOW they will get into
trouble, there is probibly something wrong.

| I agree with everybody else on this one - SEE A VET.
There are a multitude of reasons why she would do this, and by far
the commonest is bladder/kidney trouble.
If she checks out AOK, consider these:
* Is there anyone/anything new in the house? (esp. a new cat or
other type of pet that may compete for attention)
* Has anything in the house been moved or changed in any way?
(esp. concerning the litter box - new location, new litter, etc.)
* Finally, and strangely enough, has she been spayed?
For the longest time my sister had a terrible problem with her
baby urinating ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER!
She would go on her books, her carpet, even her bed - she had
no idea what was wrong. The cat would look her right in the eye
as she did all of this, as if she were proud. Patti took her to
the vet, and they said she was fine. Then she tried moving the
litter to her more frequent spots...this didn't work either.
We tried everything! Finally, I asked MY vet what the problem
could be, and she said that the cat just needed to be spayed.
Don't you know it worked! She's been an angel ever since!
Good luck.

| My kitten, Black Thunder, does the same thing but she is too young
to be spayed.
Does anyone have any other suggestions??? She is such a love
otherwise.
She does have her own cat box and I clean it frequently.
