1545.0. "Patch had babies!" by SMEGIT::STUDLEY () Tue Jul 12 1988 13:30

My Patch gave birth to two beautiful babies this morning...on my
daughter's birthday! I'm so happy and so proud of her.

She had a fairly easy deliver. It was obvious when she woke me
up at 5:00 AM that she was about to deliver and wanted me there.
We had been preparing for this for a while. She had been investigating
all sorts of places around the house for a couple of weeks and it
seemed her favorite places were the coat closet in the dining room
and the linen closet in the bath room. So I cleaned out the bottom
of both and put in blankets and sheets to make her comfortable.
But when the time came, she couldn't decide where she wanted to
go. She would go from one closet to the other and wouldn't settle
down. She ended up delivering them under the sofa bed in the sun
    room.

The bed was opened up and I took the mattress off so I could watch
in case she need me to help. But I just sat there talking to her
which seemed to sooth her somewhat. I stayed with her for about
an hour after the babies were born and then had to leave for work.
I'm going home at lunchtime to check on them.

The babies are just beautiful. One is white with grey markings
and the other is black with a white face and white on the tips of
his paws. (Marion, if you are reading this, you may recall the
description of "Blackie" in note 1508.12. Guess I know who daddy
    is.)

Well, must run home to check on them. Will update you when I get
back. Since Patch is actually my grandaughter's cat, guess that
    makes me a great-grandmother!

    Janet,

Are you planning to keep the babies or find homes for them (thru
    this notes file maybe :-).

Did you breed her on purpose or was this an unexpected pregnancy?

    Just curious.

    Congratulations, Patch!

1545.2Two More!!SMEGIT::STUDLEYTue Jul 12 1988 16:5521
Well, when I got home I had quite a surprise. Two more kittens!

    Re: .1

No, I didn't breed her on purpose. You might be able to tell from
my excitement over this that this is the first time I have ever
had a cat that had kittens. My animals have ALWAYS been spayed
or neutered. When Patch came to me, she was apparently in heat
or came into heat shortly thereafter. I thought her strange behavior
was because she was not used to being made to stay inside, so
(stupidly) I let her out. I plan to keep 2 of the babies and my
daughter's friend, a vet technician, wanted 2. I had already found
homes for up to 6 if she had had that many.

Being new at this, I do have a couple of questions. How soon can
I have Patch spayed? Also, how soon should she and the kittens
be checked by the vet? Any advice on caring for Mommy and her new
    babies would be appreciated.

So, tell us what the other two look like! And, are you sure she
is finished? I would call your vet and ask your questions, unless
some FELINEr comes thru with the info.

Of the other 2, one is black with white face and mittens (like the
first one) and the other is white with black patches, very much
    like "momma kitty".

Like I said, I'm new at this. I thought she was finished this morning
but was wrong. Can't wait to get home tonight!

Congrats on the four (and counting?) new honies! So glad to hear
they already have homes waiting for them...

Mom-cat can be fixed after the little ones are weaned. Do not,
however, let her out. All of my mom-cats have gone into another
heat before they are through nursing.

Now I am sure that it wasn't my Sahwshie who is the Daddy-cat 'cause
    he's loaded with blanks ;^D !

If there are no more, how about two from in here for the other
expectant parents you had lined up...huh, huh???

Thanks for the suggestion....I had already thought about it. Mentioned
it to one of the expectant parents last night and she was all for
it. Will get in touch with the other one and I'm sure she will
be willing to adopt from here also.

Will get the ball rolling as soon as possible!

Think of poor little Karissa of note 414.250 and 1544. I will pay
for her vet expenses just to find her a good home! She's not a
kitten but is still very sweet.

I just went through the baby bit with my cat. We had her spayed
last Thursday, 7/7. She had the babies on 3/29. The vet wouldn't
spay her until the beginning of July. He wanted to make sure that
she was dried up so that she wouldn't have any problems in the
    recovery.

The kittens went to their new home at 8 weeks, which was around
    Memorial Day.

We kept one and the other four I had no problem finding homes for.

Good luck!!!!! I'm sure that other NOTErs will help you with more
    information.
