1533.0. "Nike Animal Rescue Foundation (NARF)" by SCRUZ::CORDES_JA (By the shards of my dragon's egg) Thu Jul 07 1988 21:53
I've recently stumbled across a no kill shelter/foundation in the
San Jose area. I'm going to type in some pieces of information
taken from a copy of their newsletter I picked up at the recent
Tapestry N Talent. Thought the local noters might find a need
for this information (reprinted without permission, of course).

The Nike Animal Rescue Foundation (NARF)
406 S. Bascom Avenue, Box #176
San Jose, CA 95128
(408) 224-NARF
The Nike Animal Rescue Foundation is a non-profit organization founded
in 1985, dedicated to protecting dogs and cats. We are striving
to eliminate animal overpopulation through spay and neuter programs
and public education. Our volunteers rescue and shelter dogs and
cats in need, provide medical care, and locate and qualify permanent
homes.
("Nike" is the name of the German Shepherd which was this foundation's
first rescue.)
NARF holds meetings on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm.
(Send me mail if you are interested in attending and I'll pass on
the contact's phone number.)

Pet Sitting Service
Spay and Neuter Program
-----------------------
We are continuing to sponsor a spay and neuter program for cats
in cooperation with several veterinarians in the Bay Area. This
is an opportunity to bring in those stray cats in the neighborhood
for spaying and neutering at a reduced cost. Contact a Board Member
for information about the participating veterinarians in your area
and to obtain a certificate. This is an extremely important aspect
of animal overpopulation prevention. The spaying and neutering
of dogs and cats now avoids future generations of unwanted, suffering
animals.
Pet Sitting
-----------
This service is offered in or out of the home. Animals will be
given food and fresh water, and litter boxes will be cleaned. We
can bring in your mail and newspaper, turn on lights, and water
plants (indoor or outdoor). Last year NARF earned over $1,300 from
pet sitting. We would like to have more volunteers to pet sit in
their areas.
(I didn't not print the contact's phone number if you are interested
in volunteering or having NARF pet sit for you, please contact me and
I'll give you the number.)
Veterinary Support
------------------
NARF is fortunate to have twelve Veterinary Hospitals and Clinics
providing reduced rates for services and/or allowing us to pay our
bills on a monthly basis. The assistance of these generous
veterinarians enables us to continue to grow and save more lives.
PLEASE, if you are looking for a new vet, try to use one who supports
NARF. Our supporting Vets are:
Boulevard Pet Hospital San Jose
Johnson Veterinary Hospital Los Gatos
Stanford Pet Clinic Palo Alto
Cherry Chase Pet Hospital Sunnyvale
Animal Medical Clinic Milpitas
Village Square Veterinary Hospital Portola Valley
Animal Health Center Santa Clara
Irvington Pet Hospital Fremont
Evergreen Veterinary Clinic San Jose
Bay Cities Spay and Neuter Clinic Milpitas
Mission San Jose Pet Hospital Fremont
The Cat Hospital Campbell

If anyone is interested in a copy of the newsletter I have, please
let me know. It is approx. 11 pages so I didn't type in everything.
There are stories of the cats and dogs that have already been rescued
and placed in homes and those still waiting.
There is a form attached to the newsletter for those of you who
might be interested in receiving the newsletter on a regular basis.
They request an annual $10.00 donation to cover printing and postage.
There is also a section on this form for anyone wishing to donate
to the following NARF funds.
Crisis Medical Fund
Dog and Cat Food
General Contribution
Kathleen Desimone Memorial Fund
Spay and Neuter Fund
Shelter Rescue Fund
Memorial or Honorary Contribution
