Last evening was quite hectic at my house - at least for the felines.I
have 7 cats - 3 males, 4 females - all spayed/neutered, all of whom
get along really well, i.e. they eat, sleep and play together.
However, while I was watching the VCR a scuffle started in the
kitchen, moved into the hall and into the bedroom before I could
separate them (it was two of my males). There was no blood spilled,
no cuts, or scratches, just hair everywhere and lots of growling.
So I put one guy in a bedroom and the other guy in another bedroom to
let them cool down. (These guys were Dini and Francis).
Then no sooner had I sat back down again, than alot of hissing
started and one of my females was chasing another female down the
hall and into the diningroom where the chase-ee ran under the couch.
The chase-er continued hissing and growling, so I put her into the
bathroom.(Chase-er was PC, and chase-ee was Jennifer)
Then another female ran through the remaining rooms at top speed
and growling all the time. So I caught her and put her into the
living room. (Daisy)
So now I had 1 cat in a bedroom, another cat in another bedroom,
one cat under the couch, one cat in the bathroom, one cat in the
livingroom. That left 1 male, and 1 female just watching the fiasco.
(These were Murphy and Dorrie).
These cats weren't fighting over food as they had been fed, and there
is always dry food out, and they never act that way.
(This morning - everything was as it usually is - calm and congenial.)
Everyone was best buddies again. I am not particularly worried about
last might but just wondered what might have caused their unusual behavior.
Everything was the same last night inside my home - no loud noises,
no visitors who might have upset them, no change in food, litterboxes
clean and in same place as always. The only thing I came up with
was ---- it was a full moon. - Or may be another cat outside?
I don't think idea #2 is feasible tho as I used to always bring
stray and hurt cats into the house (but they were kept separated)
and sometimes these strays would howl and hiss, and my cats never
acted like that.
any ideas.?

Sounds like my house once a day (never the same time every day,
but a lot of times mid to late evening after the after-supper-
naps, which end at 10:30 pm). I just let them go at it, and
then everything goes back to normal with me vaccing up the
flying fur! I think it's their way of expending unused
energy - sure does scare the H#%@#ll out ya! As long as
there is no blood on the floor, and no abscesses develop
from nipping, worry not!

Guess what? My house was the exact same last night!!! I was wondering
the same thing!!!! Usually by that time their all in their favorite
places sleeping but NONE of them were...... There was definitely
something in the air last night...... Tonight should be real fun
seeing it's the full moon!!!!! Good luck.....

The full moon's technically tonight (it's reaching its exact
astronomical full even as I write). The full_moon influence is
well known in som,e quarters, and it may have been contributory.
However, last night our furfaces were as _quiet_ as they've ever
been.

Perhaps this is why Fuzzles woke me every hour last night going
from my pillow, to my nightstand, to the windowsil and back again.
She usually only does this during the day to keep cool...

My two kitties (Spike and Christie, known as "The Beasties") were a
bit crazy that night too. According to "Catlore" by Desmond Morris
it seems that the "expending energy" theory holds well - though it
doesn't explain the full moon connection.
Apparently our beloved town felines these days are spoilt rotten,
what with regular food relieving them of the need to hunt and their
every whim catered to (good bedding, a roof over their heads, warmth
etc). So sometimes they get bored and will use any excuse to get
going - racing round the house madly, fighting with inanimate objects
and suchlike. They've even been known to pick fights with their
owners so it says..................and they tend to do it at about
the same time each day if they're prone to this sort of behaviour.
I'd recommend "Catlore" - it's a great book and gives you clues
to cat body-language (six tail signals!). A copy will be back in
Reading library in about a week........
