1427.0. "Television adoptions" by GYPSC::SHIPLEY (Is there life after DEC) Mon Jun 06 1988 07:13

Here in Munich, we get several television stations including
the two main Austrian stations. Each week on one of the Austrian
stations there is a 15 minute programme called "Wer will mich?"
(Who wants me?). This programme is dedicated to finding homes for
cats and dogs held in shelters and each week you get about 6/8 dogs
and 8/10 cats, they are all in the studio and the cats are brought
in to sit on the presenter's lap, the dogs just sit quietly at her
side on a leash. Some are obviously a little upset but most are very
quiet and well behaved. The cats are usually between 1 and 7 or 8
years old (no little kittens), sometimes a mother and son/daughter
to be kept together where possible. All cats and dogs have been
neutered. Potential owners are invited to ring a special phone
number to be checked out. I challenge any one of us fellow noters
not to feel "gimme gimme - I'll take two" during (and after)
watching the show and, I believe, the show is very successful in
    placing the animals.
Does this happen anywhere else on any other station in the world
    that any Feliners know about?

    Cheers

    Brian

HELLO IN MUNICH.....I'VE NEVER HEARD OF AN ADOPTION PROGRAM ON TV
HERE IN MASSACHUSETTS. I THINK IT'S A GREAT IDEA! HOWEVER, I'D
NEVER BE ABLE TO WATCH IT WITHOUT A BREAKING HEART AND GETTING IDEAS
I SHOULDN'T HAVE (MY HOUSE HAS REACHED IT'S LIMIT WITH FURRY FRIENDS).

I think that is great idea, and it works!

We have Wednesday's Child on air - why not an animal adoption program!

We have a similar program run by the SPCA in Vancouver. They have
a spot one a week and show dogs/cats etc up for adoption. Different
areas do their own shows, usually it is on a community station in
the late afternoon/weekend mornings (I think). Also they (SPCA)
invite you to walk their dogs for a couple of hours on the weekends.
No condtions are attached - that is I can go and walk a dog or two
just for the fun of it. Actually, I am not fond of dogs but it
did make feel I was useful and made me walk (which I dislike even
    more !)

This is/was a very effective marketing tool and makes the public
    more aware of the SPCA.

Some newspapers out here run a photo once a week of an animal at
a local shelter who is waiting to be adopted. It sells newspapers
and it gets animals adopted -- maybe folks associated with shelters
could suggest this to their local newspapers.

Concord New Hampshire adverstises their animal shelter on T.V.
The station also shows pictures of 3 or 4 animals that are
    availble for adoption.
